Hi,

So I've been doing really bad in my economics class, really bad. As of the second midterm, I now have a D in that class, and there is no way I can get a B, much less an A in that class unless I ace the final completely (for a B). I really don't want this to drag my GPA, because without this class, I'd have a 3.7 (A in calc, A in chem, B in bio), but the problem is, I'd only be taking 10 credits if I drop econ. Would med schools look down on this, or if I just take the normal load from second semester on will I be fine? The drop will appear on my transcript, but I really don't want to put myself in a 3.3 (best case scenario) already my freshman year. I want to do medicine really bad, and I know I need a high GPA, and right now, that's not going to happen if I keep this class. So would you drop in my shoes, or just accept it given that I'd only be taking 10 credits on a semester system after the drop?

Its kind of a tough call........but i think a 10 unit semester lookws WAY better than a D on a transcript. I'm sure you will get different oninions on this though.

The other option if you are applying DO schools is that you keep the econ course, do your best to raise it as much as possible, and then you RETAKE it if you end up with a D. The DO schools give grade forgiveness, so if you do poorly in a course and you retake it and do better then they wont factor in the first grade. The problem here is that you will need to figure out why you have a D and then take the course all over again. So, if you do do poorly in the course....just RELAX....breathe...your dreams ARE NOT shattered to pieces and YOU CAN make up for it. Just keep doing all the right things, study hard, participate in ECs, study for the MCAT, shadow a DO, etc etc and it will all fall in to place.

If you remember only only one thing from this post.........BREATHE. It will all be okay. i promise. You are only a freshman, you have 3.5 years left of college! Enjoy it!

I would drop and overload on credits next semester than take a D (or C) in a non-science class.

I would drop the class, and free up some extra study time in my other classes.
You'll be wasting your time if you study and still end up with a D, you could of used that time to study for your other 10 credits.

Don't retake a course you hate, I would rather just drop it now.

go ahead and drop, unless you can do what I did. I was doing really bad in my economics class and then the professor said at the final we could sign an agreement before hand stating that either we wanted our final averaged or for what we make to just be our grade. I chose to use what I made on my final for my grade. got an A. But, that's an unlikely scenario. Anyway, I have the sloppiest transcripts of probably any pre med and I've made it in.

Drop it and take it next year. Why are you taking economics?

dude, its your first semester.... 10 credits is not a big deal when your getting used to teh college lifestyle... drop the class, take more than normal next semester or take a summer class

oh, and avoid classes like econ! haha

Is this going to be just a drop (no record of it) or a W (add/drop date has been and gone)? W's probably don't look too impressive either. If it would be a W I would be more inclined to just get a C in the class, get motivated for next semester and start a nice upward trend that extends through your senior year! If there is no way to get at least a C then I would take the W (if that's the case). If you can simply just drop it, then that's the route I would suggest.

And as others have said.....what's up with the name? 🙂

Good luck either way!

The username was sarcastic. I guess with my posts here being about what they are though people didn't pick up on that lol.

Drop it and take it next year. Why are you taking economics?

I thought I might want to do business, but now I realize that I really want to be a doctor, so in a way, I guess it's good that I took it?

I know I need to enjoy college, and I am, I just don't want to have a D or a C on my transcript. I don't want to be cocky because I still have a month to go, but I have solid As in calculus and chemistry, and a chance of getting an A in Biology, although right now it's a mid (aka solid) B, so I think I'm doing decently minus the economics class. But I'm just worried because I want to be an anesthesiologist, and I know that it's hard to do that from a DO school already (correct me if I'm wrong about anesthesiology and DO, as I could be), but yeah. I know what you mean for sure that I need to have fun, and I am.

To the guy that asked if it was a withdrawn. I think it might be. We have what are called Q drops at least at our college, and basically it's just a no grade. I think it shows up on the transcript somehow, but I'd really like to avoid getting a C, especially in a non-science class. I'd rather take psychology from a professor that hands out 70% As next semester in a class I like than get a C in a class that I hate that will lower my GPA 0.4 points minimum.

lots of DO anesthesiologists. It all depends on you.

And I'd rather have a W on my transcript than a D.

If you're positive you're getting a D then yes drop the class. The only issue is that more often than not you end up doing better than you think in classes you really bomb.

Oh the other hand, I got a C- in calc the first time I took it first semester freshman year. Its been the only c range grade I ever got and has haunted me since. Oh and you say worst case you'll have a 3.3? I had a 2.78 my first semester so 3.3 is hardly death for first semester of college.

retake it in the summer
if i had known about DO grade forgiveness...
argh, oh well, no point in dwelling on the past

I agree with ShyRem, a W looks better than a D. Dont get a D!!!

But work hard and dont have a lot of W's which will raise eyebrows when applying. I think I finished with 3 W's for a number of reasons (didnt like teh class, etc.....) The subject never came up in my internviews. As long as you keep them to a very minium, you should be fine.

Work hard!! Good luck

Yes, I would drop too. D looks a lot worse than a 10 credit load.

Drop that mother! Take the W and cut your losses!
