Think about this: Would you ever work for say America's (worst) Best or a very high paying corporate job so you could make as much money as you could for one year and then use your savings for an eventual business endeavor? No b.s. This is only a legitimate question if you follow through with the plan. Work your a** off, save as much as you can, and leave the corporate bastards behind so you can pursue your dream. I understand some will argue that you won't want to leave because of the high salary, but you will want to leave once you see 40 patients a day for a year.

corporate bastards (lol)

I don't see why not...this is why you see young OD's and not senior docs working @ walmart.

As long as you actually save as much as you can. I've been toying with ideas myself and a couple of the ODs I shadowed did something similar.

There are a number of alternatives, I think I'd result to a corporate as an absolute last choice. Are you wanting to open cold? How about getting in as an associate for a doc that is looking to get out soon and taking over his practice.

TONS of variables and options.

It's something I'll definitely consider once I'm done. Especially for paying off the debt of school- I'm sure all of us would be happy to have it paid for sooner! There's no shame in working at Walmart or Costco, although I'll definitely be looking at becoming part of a group practice as a first choice.

I've noticed that for some reason many people think that optometrists who work for corporations are "just" opticians. (Like since they aren't part of a practice they aren't "medical" anymore?) A position as an optician is a very respectable career choice, but if I'm gonna go through 8 years of school I want to minimize the chance of being mistaken for one haha 😉
