Would you lend your keys to a coworker who forgot theirs?

Yesterday, a coworker who works on a locked unit in a psychiatric hospital with me forgot his keys and wanted to borrow mine. My shift just ended and his was beginning. I don't know him very well and said that I was uncomfortable with that. Then he asked someone else and they immediately said, yes with a comment about, "of course you can. What did you think, that I would say no and make you go back home to get yours?"

So, maybe I was a jerk (unintentionally) or smart. What would you have done? Why?

Being a pre med might change things. I'm a pre med and to some limited degree monitor my behavior based on motivations of getting excellent LoRs, etc., probably not unlike others on here. Many of my coworkers are NOT pre meds....

Are the keys associated with you?(if something is opened, etc is it logged that you were responsible?)
If yes, I wouldn't let any borrow the keys....
That would be taking responsibility if they mess up or allow unauthorized access.

Seconded. If they were your sole responsability and are identifiable as your keys rather than some standardized set that everyone carried carbon-copies of, then I would not lend my keys to anyone and it is probably against the operating policy of the place you work at. If everyone's keys were identical and there wasn't any specific responsibility associated with them, I would probably lend my keys to a trusted co-worker.

If my shift was ending, I'd probably walk over there with them and do what I need to do so they can start (to my understanding of the situation). I'd definitely lend my keys to my best buddy on the job though.

Don't sweat it. You will live. Just make nice next time you see them.

I'm paranoid. If I don't know him too well, how do I know he didn't get fired and wants to get in so he can harm someone? Or what if he does something, and it gets associated with me because he's using my keys? Unless he's a good friend of mine, not gonna happen.

They'll try to appeal to your "good guy"-ness in order to make up for their failure, but if they were such a good guy they wouldn't even ask you to compromise yourself in the first place. You don't owe them this, and if you do lend the keys it is only a very generous favor, not an obligation.

I would lend them, but I have too much trust in humanity. Gets me burned sometimes
