just wondering if the program would offer to pay for its residents to take step 3 by the end of their PGY-1?

and also if it is mandatory to take step 3 before starting PGY-2?

thanks!

Curiously, I have noticed lately that on the programs' websites they are noting that they will pay for the Step 3 exam. I'm guessing they are utilizing this as a "perk" of the program. They do give the two days off without penalty.

To your second point, more and more programs are leaning towards having the test past at some point in the residency, some opting for it to be done prior to the second year beginning, and some prior to graduation. From what I've seen, that seems to be the trend in the last few years.

Hope this is of some help to you. Good luck!

I've never heard of that, but if programs do offer to pay, that's great! IIRC it's around $650 to sign up for that test.

Different programs require you to pass the test by different deadlines. Check with each individual program (if you're a med student) or your particular program (if you're a resident).

My program makes you use either conference days (we get a handful per year) or vacation days for Step 3, you can use your more-than ample book fund to pay for it, and there is no timeline as to when you must take the exam.

The Family Medicine Residency program that I will be an intern at in July does pay for my USMLE Step 3 fee. That's a nice perk!!!! 😀

The Family Medicine program I am going to be an intern in requires that I pass Step III before 2nd year. But I am not sure if they will be reimbursing me for the cost. Interesting question. I hope they will. That would be nice.
