Hi, I could really use some quick advice.

I currently have a C- in a upper level computer science course, but because a lot of people are doing really poorely in his class the professor is willing to give anyone a WP to anyone who wants it (even though the semester is almost over). Normally I'd be happy with a C-, and just move on, but I think its unlikely I can score a C- on the final (The final is not cumulative, but I the latter material is just waay over my head), in which case my grade would drop to a D, possibly a F. Furthermore, because a lot of people are taking advantage of his drop policy, the CS department is going to offer my cs class again next semester (its normally offered just once a year), so I will still be able to graduate in time.

So should I drop or take a chance and try to get a C- (which I think is unlikely)?

Thanks in advance!

Ummm.... are you asking whether it's better to have one W or a D (C-, at best) on your transcript....?

Hate to be stating the obvious.....drop.

hehe sorry I think my post was confusingly worded ( I tend to do that a lot).

Yes I suppose thats what I am asking, is it better to keep the W or get a C- (more likely a D) ?

I agree with surge. One or two Ws on a transcript are pretty much overlooked. A D is going to pull down your GPA and will likely stand out more than a W.

My worst grades during undergrad were all from when I thought I ought to drop but tried to stick it out. I say drop. It's better than explaining a D or F at all your interviews.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll drop today =)

Aaahhhhh...........the power of SDN.... 😀

j/k - I think it's a smart choice given the opportunity. Good luck.

Yeah - there are certain classes that just aren't worth the pain - especially if you're going to have to explain the 'D' you received three years later to an Ad Com.

My second quarter of calculus had a class average of 32% on the first exam. At that point, I figured there was something inherently wrong in a class where 95% of the class failed the first of two exams that would be given that quarter (not including the final). Bail out and try again!

(By the way, only one of the four schools I applied to asked me to explain the "W" on my transcript).
