For prompts involving topics like:

- Value of education:
- Education serves to restrict the human mind rather than to free it:
- A good education is its own reward:
- Education makes everyone equal:
- The best education teaches students to question authority:

What are some good historical events, current events, or other examples I could read into so I might be a little bit more well-versed in this area? (Example doesn't necessarily have to apply to all of them.)

Thanks!

You could use these: --Education helped Obama become the president, but Paris Hilton did not need education to become famous and successful... explain clearly why though --becoming a doctor vs. becoming a truck driver: explain how those job are different, could also say that if you consider every life experience as "education" then every job requires education, but still, like, McDonald's does not require as much education in any sense as becoming an judge does

Here are some possibilities.

The life of Benjamin Franklin. His life story demonstrates the value of education for an individual's advancement, and as a public person he has an unmatched record of creating educational institutions, such as the University of Pennsylvania, lending libraries, etc. for the benefit of society. Here is a link to a famous essay of his on the value of education for colonial America: http://www.archives.upenn.edu/primdocs/1749proposals.html

Another example might be to compare and contrast democratic, philosophical ancient Athens versus authoritarian Sparta. The benefits of open inquiry in Athenian accomplishments in philosophy and science versus the benefits of rigid training in Spartan military success in the Peloponnesian War.

The G.I. bill is a great example for public investment in education producing social benefits.

Great self-taught persons include Shakespeare and Abraham Lincoln to contrast to stultifying scholasticism.

Hope this helps.

Kaplan tip: Memorize a bank of ~10 citable, interesting historical events, articles, books, or examples. Quote them in your essay. The more classical or esoteric, the better. Try Candide, the process of beta-testing software, and 1984 (the book).
