I've only noticed this in two bio classes so far (Bio I and Microbiology) so maybe it's not the norm but how come during lecture people seem to be copying every word the professor says?

I understand taking notes is important but what's the point if he/she is simply regurgitating the information?

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this?

Not everyone learned proper note taking skills.

Bio I, probably the first semester of their college careers, they haven't learned the ins and outs yet about note taking.

Microbiology, there is a ****load of information to learn. You'll see this in pharmacy school. The professor makes already detailed powerpoint slides and posts them up the day before the lecture, and when the lecture comes, people are now filling that up with even more information with what comes out of the professors mouth.

Sometimes I take notes just to reinforce the information. Also the information is sometimes presented in a different way from the teacher.

I got a pulse smart pen the records the lecture and syncs it to my writing. I can take my normal notes and if I need clarification or want to hear that section of the lecture again I just replay it. It's also really nifty because the pen transcribes your notes you your computer.

Why does how others take notes bother you? Different things work for different people. Actively taking notes (even if it is verbatim), helps me pay attention to what is being said.

Where did you get this pen??

I want one of those pens. Especially since it is now compatible with the mac.

yeah, i gotta get one of those, but it has a pretty big price tag.

Not only that, but writing helps my thought process, which is why I was extremely unhappy when the professors didn't allow scrap paper and stopped giving out quizzes on paper.

Instead, they are just giving us a scantron and the questions are displayed on a projector screen with a 2 minute timer/question.

This sucks for 2 reasons.

#1 - If I come in late, I'm screwed.
#2 - You get the same amount of time for easy questions and hard questions. So me finishing a question in 4 seconds doesn't free up my time for the next question.

Ooooh that does suck. That 2 minutes per question seems quite unfair.

That does suck! I am a pencil and paper kind of problem solver.

exactly! writing does help my thought process. however, i still don't write everything word-for-word, unless the professor really sucks...i'd like to take some notes home & closely study them (because I usually understand things better out of the classroom - notes really help me follow along, even when i don't understand what i write down).

I wouldn't say it bothers me but I have always been curious.

I often wonder what people are writing down also. In our pharmacotherapy classes, we are given almost everything we need in power point slides that we can print off. Yet, I see people scrambling around, trying to write down every goddamn word that is being said by the professor. I don't get it...

Yeah, basically my thought process is a lot like Dr. House's thought process. I need to write stuff down to think of stuff.

Yea, I have no idea why people do this. In my genetics class, the prof types up the notes as he lectures (weird I know!). He tells everyone he'll upload the notes and the exam material will only be on the notes.

But

What do I see around me? 200+ people still writing notes. I probably look like a ******* to them since I was just sitting there, but instead of diverting my attention away to write, I focused entirely on the material. I got an A in that class. Same thing for my instrumental analysis class.

Sometimes, I have no idea why people would transcribe what the prof is saying too... There's no point in writing down the fact that a block of wood floats and a brick sinks in water... yet when it came out of the prof's mouth there was another flurry of scribbling.

I find writing actually distracts me from learning the material since the prof speaks so fast that you're really writing as fast as you can instead of actually reading and understanding.

people have various learning styles.

writing down every word the instructor says brings you back vividly to the very day you were in lecture once you review your notes. By writing everything down, when you study it, you will recall exactly what the prof was saying, how they were saying it, what they looked like when the said it, etc. sometimes just paying attention and doing less note-taking is much better for short-term understanding. But there are tidbits of info that are easier to recall if you see your notes later on

Wow. I always was scrambling to get my math homework done in chemistry while trying to hide the fact that I was doing math homework. I would pretend to be taking notes, while frantically trying to finish my math homework before the end of class/beginning of math class. I think a lot of people do this. 😀

Why bother going to chemistry at all then? Your mind is clearly not focused on chem... You could probably work faster if you were at a real table instead of those small armrest ones.

Does this pen work well in lecture halls?

Yes, but you have to write it on special paper. (see their website)

they're probably chatting on AIM, hahah.

yeah word for word note taking is dumb...everyone i knew who did that flunked out of biology while i was an undergrad.

targeted note taking ftw

I honestly don't know why people write down word for word when taking notes. But maybe it's a better learning process for some people. Usually I just listen, then I paraphrase the important stuff in a few words, it's just my style.

Well it bothers me. Some people claim that when they write things they stick to the memory in a more solid fashion but all the kids I knew who wrote religiously were the ones who ended up failing the tests. Why not just sit back, save the ink and paper, listen, learn something, then take note of it? It's especially hilarious when the teacher is reading from a Powerpoint and these wana-be's are writing as if ink and paper are to be rendered obsolete in the next 24 hrs.

Either they have their note taking down to a science or they are all show and naive.

I wasnt even referring to the note-taking part, rather can you comment on its recording ability? How good is the recording?

rather immature. why does their failing bother you. seems you have so much contempt for those taking meticulous notes, that you should be glad they failed.

"wanna-be, show?" you think they are taking good notes because they want to be something...what, a secretary? who are they showing off for? your sexy ass?

do you honestly believe people fail for taking detailed notes? this is correlation and not causation. they failed, despite good note-taking, not because of it

Bio, I didn't write down what the prof said cause most of the time it was useless stuff. Micro, the prof used powerpoint and everything that was on powerpoint was pertinent to the exams. My favourite was Anatomy though. I'd go to class with the textbook and a highlighter. Didn't even have to read beforehand. His lecture was straight from text. I smoked that course 😀

The recording is actually great. It's digital (obviously) and crystal clear. I never have any issues with background noise or anything. Honestly, the pen is one of the greatest tools for school I have. 🙂

As far as the notebook comment, yes you need "special" ones but that is because the pen recognizes the specific notebook and also because the controls to use the pen are on the bottom of each page. They are no more expensive than 5-star notebooks either. (I got a 5 pack for $19) and since I use I notebook for two classes, it's well worth it.

i've seen this....same ****ers that try to ask questions during a lecture to sound smart, STFU dumb mother ****er! stop holding up the lecture!

i saw people haul bio books around at the beginning of the semester to class....WHY, people are just dumb. not that i cared, it was kind of funny. i'd show up to tests with a newspaper to read before they handed it out while others flipped out/were buried in notes, what's that gonna do? if you haven't learned it by now, you're effed.

Everyone studies differently. It's pretty disrespectful to call people X Y Z based on their study habits.

well they're dumb ****s and deserve to fail, if you feel the need to copy everything down that you read, you will probably fail in life too. fact.

I'm more inclined to believe that if you have a horrible and disrespectful attitude to your colleagues/co-workers/classmates/peers/etc., then you're likely to fail.

Sadly, if there are no PowerPoints or lecture notes, I'm one of those people who try and write everything the instructor says. And if it's a videotaped class...I spend over twice the lecture time writing everything down verbatim.

But it worked for me; can't argue with the results. Everyone does things differently, and if writing down everything will help you get better grades, more power to you. If you can get by without doing so, more power to you as well.

Wow, why does everyone care about notetakers?

I take notes all the time. I don't even read my notes for finals. I take notes only to practice and then practice new problems for the finals....

well they're dumb ****s and deserve to fail, if you feel the need to copy everything down that you read, you will probably fail in life too. fact.

Dude, maybe you are the one that is failing in life. It seems like you don't put enough effort in school...

One last thing, here is a good quote from ShaolinRX in the other thread:

Take copious amounts of notes! Or get to know someone else that does and "borrow" theirs. Write down every single thing the professor says. Even if it sounds like something lame, it may be something that might show up on a test.

:laugh:...got a laugh out of your posts. My thoughts exactly.

^can't believe we have people in pharmacy school with that attitude. lay off people who are at least giving it their all...it's really NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! if ya'll are such know-it-all, why don't you give these people some pointers on how to study for their classes? however, since ya'll are some conniving jerks, ya'll would rather take a field day to make fun of the way people study. i question the way ya'll live your lives. just lay off. this thread went too far. have some respect for people & their aspirations, motivation, and beliefs. part of success is having respect for other people. and trust me, people who take a lot of notes (for their benefit - as a tool for studying) do get far in life. it's apparent determination & appreciation for learning, because i can go into a classroom & listen to the lecturer...however, can the lecturer tell you're learning when they don't see you writing in your notebook? well, it's not apparent...cuz for all i know you could be looking at the wall past the lecturer. so for the final time, lay off people who have a different way of learning than yours. don't take this post on a superficial layer. take some time to think about what you've written on SDN, because believe me...there's a level of ignorance & immaturity in your posts (both mike & confetti). i dont even know if i should take ya'll seriously; you're really trolls to this board...asking for trouble.

Looks like I'll be putting this down as a must have. For me repetition brings familiarity. I was concerned that it will have problems with background noise. Thanx.

Yes, confettiflyer with 1762 posts and mike with 400+ posts both must be trolls right?

I agree with them.

i think i just hit a nerve and caused some of you n00bs to sweat a little 😍

So that I didn't miss anything/knew where we were in class/could listen to lectures. Why else would I go?? I'm awesome at multitasking I guess.

to each their own

anyone who gets their panties in a twist over how someone else takes notes, studies, or takes a piss, is a douchebag extraordinaire.

ahhh well. i wasn't upset. someone has to tell you when you're wrong. your post deserved the slaughter, considering where you are in your life. You know and I know...

I'm not knocking anyone that writes everything down in lecture, to each its own, but I too also wonder what the hell are they writing. My professors actually type up her notes for the class, so again what the hell are they writing again LOL

At first I was second guessing myself because I was literally the only one not writing anything, but getting an A in the class without taking any notes...PRICELESS LOL
