I got a letter in the mail from one of my state schools requesting that I provide details of how I spent the 2.5 month period between my graduation and the beginning of my first job. I am a non traditional student, so that was quite a number of years ago.

I guess my app is pretty borderline if they need this info to decide if they want to interview me. Sheesh.

You are correct, it was Downstate. Did those other people end up getting interviews or acceptances? Downstate is actually one of the schools that are high on my list too..

They really do. Just as an example, I called MCW's admissions director after I was accepted to ask a question, and he not only remembered my name (Although I've never formally introduced myself), but he knew where I went to school and what my grades and MCAT scores were. It felt weird to have a complete stranger know so much about me.

That is ridiculous. Adcoms should spend more time scrutinizing what's important in an application, not the 2 months spent after one's college graduation. I spent those months drinking on the beach thanking God that I wasn't in summer school like everybody else. If you ask me, I think it should be illegal for them to ask what any applicant does outside of academics, extracurriculars, and health-related volunteer work. Those are the only things that should matter in a medical school application.

Don't let it faze you. Downstate sucks. I got interviews at all the other SUNY's, but Downstate thinks its too special. They blow. They suck. They would do well playing "Suck and Blow". I think they're all so afraid to leave the building and step into the gangland section of Brooklyn that the school is located in, so they cook up ways to microanalyze everyone's app so that they can stay inside and never go home. Shmucks. 😉

as someone on this site put it, the "don't call us, we'll call you SUNY". I concur - Downstate sucks.

I've been put on post-interview "hold", and would it really hurt them to address what that means in the letter. Found out what it means here on SDN.

Downstate has been the rudest of schools but their proximity to NYC still makes it an appealing choice.

Upstate was very nice but they waitlisted me so they can...
