WTF is up with Wayne State exams?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey, so how many people would fail at least one class before they graduate? and how would that affect their applicantions for residency?

The conferences are helpful only in the sense that I probably couldn't figure out a lot of the stuff by myself, but I'm not sure if they will be tested on. They say that it's just integrating things from the lecture from a clinical perspective...they are actually kind of slow and boring, you could probably just read someone's notes

You do not want to fail even one course. That will make you unappealing to most residency programs in even moderately competitive specialties.

What about the the students who fail the class but pass the test so they don't have to retake? I've heard they give you a comprehensive exam before the summer and if you pass, you pass the class. Is this true? I don't want to be in that situation at all, but it'd be nice to know there's buffer just in case. Has anyone heard of people retaking courses? Also, how about the people who are put on the alternate track (taking 1 of the 2 year 1 classes at a time, thus extending year one to 2 years...)? What happens then? I believe if you fail more than one course during year 1 you're automatically put on the alternate track...

Keep in mind that failed courses, shelf exam retakes, leaves of absence will show up on your official transcript. Residency directors will see the "red flag" and this may hurt you for the more competitive specialties.

That being said, you can fail up to 2 courses first year (unless that's changed) and retake the exams in the summer following first year. However, if Dr. Antichrist (you know who I mean, I will not name names) deems that you should repeat first year based on your general first year performance, you might get held back to repeat the year.

Bottom line, try to do the best that you can do and pass everything because once the administration finds that you are weak, they will destroy your career. They will do this under the pretext of "ensuring that you are successful."

hey, i am not in that college. i am just talking about in general.

seriously, if only in your own college, there are that many people that failed classes, i wonder the total number of students that failed their classes in the entire country. that would be a lot, won't it.

won't they be affected a great deal?

At Wayne, it's a higher percentage than you would think. And of course, at the start of second year, there will always be a few faces who stay behind in Jaffer 😛

I think the question of failing v. not failing & the effect on your residency kind of depends on what you are planning to go into, and how well you compensate on other components of your application (honor a crapload of other classes, honoring your clinical years, rocking Step 1). So it's not the end of the world....
