As someone who has interviewed at KCOM as well as went to undergrad in somewhat nearby KC, I will say that while yes it’s not the most interesting place to live for 2 years, it makes it very conducive for studying. I too grew up in a suburban/urban environment, and had the same concerns with Kirksville, but many current students assured me that many students get together and take weekend trips to Kansas City and Columbia every now and then to get away from the town. I can say that the sim lab is very nice! It’s very comparable to ones at MD schools I’ve been to and is above ones at some DO institutions as well. Yes the OMT thing kinda kills, but I think you can circumvent this if you’re willing to make up for the lost hours. The Alumni presence in KC, the state of Missouri, the Midwest, and overall is pretty big. I’m from the West Coast and even here at a well-known medical center I’ve met some KCOM alum so I say that you should be able to network extensively. Finally, you’re right with regards to the limited research opportunities on campus. You may be able to find something to work on at the medical center in town, but some opt to find a project at one of the hospitals in KC. Only downside is the city has three medical schools so spots on research projects are coveted and may be hard to come by. As such, best recommendation would be to contact departments ahead of time to assure yourself the best chances. Also, current students I’ve talked to have said they’ve had easier times at their core research sites securing research.
Hope this helps in your decision making process!!
