I am looking for some guidance for how to pursue ophtho after discovering it late in med school. I am aware it will be a long road but it is what I want. Currently a categorical PGY-1 and US MD. Would the best strategy be to leave my residency after Intern year, go do a research year, then apply? Or would it make more sense to finish 3 year residency and apply during my final year?

1) How competitive is your application?
2) What kind of residency are you in? is your program highly ranked? famous/well known institution?
3) Are there electives in your residency ?
4) Is your residency affiliated with an Ophtho residency?
