y am i processed, yet no med schools were sent yet??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
apps will be sent out on the 14th to med schools.

why is that date specific??

I thought thye get sent starting july 1st?

It was, but AMCAS predictably delayed it. It says the 14th on their site now. We're almost there . . . hopefully.

so is the 14th the absolute first day they can get your application???

That's correct. I submitted on June 3rd at 8am. And I still have to wait until July 14th for schools to be able to view my application. You must also note that just because schools CAN view the applications on the 14th, the committee's may not meet for several more days/weeks. So it could take weeks for you to get a secondary. It's a very long, drawn-out process.

Thanks!!! I am happy now, i was worried i got my stuff in late and now it turns out its ok....

Yeah it is a long process.... Oh well what can you do..

from what i've gathered, it's almost never sent out on time (July 1st)

well, on the aamc website it says that they will START transmitting to schools on july 14th. therefore, those that turned in their applications earliest (ergo early june) will be transmitted the earliest. since there are many thousand applications to send, only god knows which date the later applications will actually be transmitted. maybe, if amcas was streamlined and efficient, it would be on the same day, but somehow i doubt it. 🙄

Can anyone post a link that shows where it says they won't send out the apps until the 14th?

So if our apps are ready, when can we expect to get our first set of secondaries?

i dunno about that though...

They are transmitted electronically, I believe teh school simply logs in and prints out the applications... So they will just have like a ton of them read on the 14th. Perhaps they will LOOK at them in order that they printed which will likely be by date, but who knows...
Either way i got it in early compard to last year when i submitted it in like october

they won't process them exactly according to order of submittance. for ex, someone who submitted on june 3 vs. someone who submitted june 12...assuming both of their apps have been verified, are both in the "processed" status on the friendly ol' amcas screen. so they both will be transmitted to schools beginning on the 14th--there's no diff timewise b/t the two apps.

the difference comes in when you're talking about processing time. for someone who submitted on the 29th, amcas prolly hasn't yet verified/processed that app. so that's going to take a bit longer to send out to schools than someone who submitted on the 3rd. ditto for apps that have problems w/transcripts, verification, etc. 2 wks after "active" status to the completion status of "processed" seems to be the norm. soooo....

don't think 2-3 wks would be a big deal. but what do i know, since i'm just going thru this process now...

The way I figure, this is how it works: (just a wild hypothesis)

Student Smith gets ALL of his stuff in/verified by June 10.
Student Jones gets ALL of his stuff in/verified by July 10.
Student Wallace gets ALL of his stuff in/verified by July 15.
Student Anderson gets ALL of his stuff in/verified by August 1.

On July 14th, the adcom from a really-on-the-ball school starts downloading apps. I imagine there's a big site for adcoms that sez: "New Apps for Harvard," which are probly listed in alpha. As the adcommer downloads and prints these off, he/she staples them and alphabetizes them, if they aren't already.

Jones goes before Smith because life is unfair for those with late-letter last names. Even if AMCAS doesn't mess up the early bird Darwin scene we've dreamt up, the adcoms certainly will cuz they have to maintain order in their office somehow.

It's still kinda fair cuz the late ones are out in the cold. When the adcommer downloads more apps (whenever the screening crew starts running out, say, in August) good ol' Anderson sits on top. Wallace, who just BARELY missed the cutoff, is WAAAY at the bottom.

I have no empirical basis for this. Just a vague sense that the chrono thing only helps to a degree.

hopefully, amcas is not totally inane, and adcoms have some shred of human decency and fairness. i would bet my money that everything, including amcas transmission and application review, is done chronologically ie by date of submission. after secondaries are sent out, though, all bets are off, as there is a new chronology formed. anderson can shove it.

The adcoms are composed of several people. Chances are that the applicantions are divided among the people on the adcom according to alphabet. Hence, Wallaces are looked at concurrently with Andersons assuming they arrive at the adcom about the same time.

Then, the adcom probably meets every so often to discuss/vote on applications "nominated" by the particular committee member who had the initial review.

My guess, just a guess, is that many many many unsuccessful applicants don't get past thier particular committee member.

Just a guess.

There's just no way it could be done chrono, logistically. These things are printed out as soon as they're downloaded, betcha anything. Once they're downloaded, they have to be organized. There's no way they're going to keep all of the applications straight if they're not alphabetized.

What if that SOB Anderson (who can shove it) calls to verify something in his app. Are they going to ask him when it went through? No, they'll go straight to the "A-G" drawer to the "A" folder, or whatever, and pull his file. I wish they had a way to put us in chrono order, I just can't fathom how they'd pull it off.

Geez, Deez, are we really fussing over the hypothetical organizational modi operandi of adcoms across the country? Is this how all pre-meds deal with the post-MCAT and primary, pre-secondary lull? God help us! 🙂

Respectfully yours,

hear hear, i was just putting my .02 in there. my guess, like everyone elses, is totally baseless, as none of us has ever sat on an adcom before. i guess i tend to think more optimistically than others.

as for the pre-secondary lull, i know what you mean. research is keeping my reasonably busy, but i can't seem to bring myself to look at secondaries yet. maybe it's my laziness, or maybe it's just the rancid fear of having to do 20+ secondaries. either way, i think we're all in the same boat: blind-folded, bent over, and heading speedily into the gaping oblivion of the admissions process.

(dr. wannabe) deez

Are you guys excited about secondaries?

I'm just not feeling like I'll be able to turn over solid secondaries in any kind of timely manner. I'm looking at the questions for the ones that are on-line, and even the straightforward prompts seem very daunting.

. . . and this is only the beginning of it.

As far as this whole July 14th business, it's definitely going to dull any kind of edge those June 1st submitters might have had. I submitted my application mid-June (although I would have submitted a little later in light of this July 14th transmission date).

You have to think that those adcoms are going to have a massive first download next week. However they're going to organize it (chronologically or alphabetically or whatever), it's still not the same as being one of those first few applicants to be reviewed during some point in June.

Haha...not to rain on anyone's parade in here but having gone through the process this past year, if you're getting this worked up just on the processing date, you're all gonna have heart attacks once the secondaries and interview process hits full force. Remember, the process takes nearly a year for some people. Sit back, be patient, and don't stress. You'll learn soon enough that med schools will take their time and there's nothing you can do about it whatsoever. Best of luck to everyone! Oh yeah, once you people that applied to 20+ schools start getting secondaries that ask you to rehash your amcas, you might start wishing that the processing date wasn't so early.....
