I am 28 years old, and currently practicing Family Medicine and
Emergency Medicine in a small Northwest Wisconsin town of 3,000, which is a member of the Mayo Health System. I was an EMT and a CPR instructor throughout my undergraduate years and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a Bachelor of Science degree
in Biology in 1997. My cumulative GPA was 3.5, with a science GPA of nearly 3.7. I took the GRE and MCAT in 1996, and my
scores were satisfactory (composite MCAT of 23).

I then was accepted to Yale University School of Medicine-Physician
Associate Program in New Haven, CT, where I graduated with a Master of
Medical Science degree in 1999. I have been a PA for almost 2 years now, and
though I have a wonderful job and work with incredible people, my interests
have matured and now largely revolve around psychiatry, in particular mood
disorders and their comorbidity with other psychiatric illnesses.

I would like to pursue my career goal of becoming a psychiatrist, and
the osteopathic model is most appealing to me.

Does anyone have some general words of advice for me? Do you think I would be competitive? I'm specifically looking at LECOM, PCOM, and OSUCOM because they aren't asking me to update my MCAT scores.

Yalepa,
Your MCAT is a little low but you will not have a problem. Of the schools you listed OSUCOM is the best. I am an intern in Detroit and going to University of Iowa for my residency. I graduated from DMU in 2000. OSUCOM is better than the others because they are a state school and have many more clinical faculty than the other schools. LECOM would be the last school on my list. If you have more questions or need some help email me and I will give you my number.
