I may have to officially join your iLUVmac Club fairly soon. And it's ONLY because I want the Garageband program. There is nothing out there for a PC that I have come across that is so easy to use, and does a fairly good job at creating professional music files. I'm thinking of getting a mac mini (a 1.25ghz w/ 1gb RAM) because I wanna keep my purchase as cheap as possible because I'm making an investment in my new ASUS notebook (no, I will not make the total leap as of yet). Plus, I'll need to purchase the mAudio 45-key midi-keyboard (currently looking at Yamaha and Creative keyboards as well), so that'll be some extra dough I'll need to shell out. I could spring for the G5, but I'd need to know if it is worth to go that extra mile, rather than wasting the money on a mac mini. I can't believe I'm buying a Mac, ONLY for one stinking program!!! 😡

I don't use GarageBand, but one of my attendings does. He loves it. (He's in a band that is doing quite well and will probably sign a record label soon enough.)

Glad we're making a convert out of ya! I really love Macs. I would suggest waiting until the Intel-based Macs come out though. I've seen one in action and it was f-a-s-t. I thought my G5 was fast until I saw this thing in action.

Welcome to the club ! I think a mac mini is a great way to go, esp if you already have a monitor to use. I'm gonna stay away from the macintels for atleast 6-12 months, to let things iron themselves out and for software to be available natively. A mac mini now will let you avoid any transition inconveniences.

Oh BTW we have ITMS in Australia now 👍 😀

Intel's creating a totally new chip for the upcoming Macs right, not using the Pentium series?

I'm guessing the new Intel-Macs won't be x86 based like PCs...otherwise they'd converge. Windows Vista on a "Mac" and OS X on a PC? Nah...

Macs will be using an x86 chip made by Intel.

While putting Windows on the Mac and using OS X on a PC aren't official yet, I can only imagine that it will only take days before someone figures out how to do both as soon as the new Macs come out.

But don't you all think that it is pretty ridiculous that I have to buy a friggin mac just to use one program?? Why couldn't Jobs be nice and have a pc version of garageband available????

BTW a mac mini of 1.25ghz and 1gb of RAM should do the job right? I don't expect to do any graphics on this thing, but just as long as I can smoothly make my music, that is all I care about. Although, when at the Mac Store, I was hooked up to a PowerMac G5 (I think). And the only lag times I encountered, was when I was switching between instruments.

I don't use Garageband, so I couldn't tell you if the G4 is sufficient. My attending used to use a Powerbook, albeit an old one, and got tired of the sluggishness. He recently switched to a very nice dual-G5 Power Mac system.

I have a feeling you'll be a complete Mac convert within a few days of using your Mac! Keep us posted.

Nope, very soon you will only use your PC for games.

I can't tell you how many years, now decades, I have been hearing that... I'm still waiting for it to happen... With the fact that they are moving to intel hardware, and they become just another OS vendor like Microsoft, I don't think it ever will...

However, I have recently gotten into ED/HD video editing and my PC (laptop) just isn't cutting it. Not even close...

Are Mac's still any good for this?

For me, it's mostly a software issue, I have tried 4 different PC software suites (Ulead/Pinnacle/etc...), and they all suck a large dong. I mostly need it for capture from analog/digital sources, frame by frame editing, video(image)/color correction (for poor analog sources), and basic transitions (fade in/fade out). Think a mini could handle this, or would I need something with more muscle?

Apple is not moving to an OS vendor model like Microsoft. Apple will continue to make its own hardware and will place anti-piracy features into its software to prevent it from being hacked. The current build was rather easily hacked because it was a demo model. When the Intel-based Macs are released, the software will feature multiple levels of security that will need to be hacked for it to run on a Windows system. Unlike the current build, each individual application will feature its own security feature and will need to be hacked (i.e., iTunes, iPhoto, Finder, iChat, etc.). This will make it so that a hacker will spend more money wasting his or her time than he/she would have spent if they had simply purchased a new system.

And yes, Apple's still reign supreme in video editing. The built-in video editor (iMovie) is OK, but Final Cut Pro HD is the best. I didn't think any other program was supporting HD except Apple's software. How are you able to edit in HD?

Because the PC would immediately self-destruct when a piece of Mac software was first started-up. 😀

Crap, you fooled me Sally. I saw this thread topic pop back up as unread and for a split second thought sunny had become a Mac convert!

😳 Sorry. I know it was a few days old, but I kept forgetting to come to this forum, so I had just read the thread for the first time and couldn't resist bumping it up.

Did I psych you out by posting this time? 😛

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like its gonna happen. I got your hopes up 😛 . If I wasn't moving out, I would have considered it, but I just could not justify buying a mac mini just to use one program.

Anyways, the day will come when I may have to buy a mac. And when that day arrives, southern doc will be allowed to hold a party in my honour 😀 .
