Hey I was wondering what some people are doing if they decide to take a year off between undergraduate graduation and medical school. What type of programs/opportunities are people doing in this year?
I am taking the year to do research, I got a pretty awesome Stem Cell gig, deriving cardiomyocytes and using them for our experiments. Also continuing with my volunteering that I've been doing, and going to the gym!!!!! Prob gonna take some guitar lessons too, about time I get some "professional" training lol.
I worked full-time as a reserve EMT for an ambulance company in my year off. It turned out to be a great experience for me (real world living 😉) and being a reservist gave me the flexibility to go to interviews 😳
I was a construction worker for two years between college and med school. Most of the members of my crew were undocumented workers from Mexico and we traveled around the Pacific Northwest working on various projects and sleeping in cheap motels. The work was kind of dangerous, particularly the machinery that I operated - I am planning a surgical career and I was always worried that I would have an accident that would cripple one of my hands. But I finished my career in construction unscathed, my hands are fine, and I made good money.
i am planning on doing some medical mission trips and continuing my volunteer work with a few of my buddies, seeing as my ECs are the only thing really lagging on my app.
oh and probably gettin some old band mates together and slappin da bass 🙂
Hopefully I will be able to do my research either with my undergrad institute or the parent system (University of Maryland)...maybe comparative analysis of rural trauma care in a region?
I'll be working in an Americorps position for the next year. I'm pretty excited about it. It should be pretty laid back and refreshing - the exact reason I took a year out in the first place!😀
