I've only heard of daily, bi-weekly, and monthly contact lenses in North America. When I visited Asia and Australia, there were such things as yearly contact lenses? I was just curious, how safe are these types of contacts and what kind of solutions would you use to keep the protein from building up?

Thanks!

I've only seen rigid gas permeable contacts as a yearly type lens. I've seen soft lenses that are 4 pairs for the year but never a soft contact that lasts a full year. I wouldn't recommend a soft contact that claims to be yearly, that's just asking for a corneal infection or worse. There are hydrogen peroxide systems that can remove deposits.

"Yearly" contact lenses do exist but they are rarely used anymore. They were much more common in the 70s and 80s.

They are not "unsafe" per se if you take proper care of them but they will build up more junk overtime so they require much more aggressive cleaning. Out of about 30000 patients in my practice, maybe 5 are still using them.
