Yes - this is exactly what I am thinking. I cannot decide if I am willing to take the plunge. Like geddy said, it is a trade of time for security. I know I love the lab, but sometimes it seems so uncertain - I can have a good idea and it works out great and turns into a whole bunch of projects, or I can have the same good idea that never goes anywhere. I guess that is what I just have to decide!!
LaDOC - I'm just finishing up my Ph.D., so don't have years and years of research experience, but I don't see it as just "the greater good." I genuinely enjoy it. It can be EXTREMELY frustrating but also EXTREMELY rewarding. I get an incredible rush when I get an exciting result.
