Perhaps, the reason why the interest in CP only is low could be because people are hedging and don't want to take the plunge. And what I mean by that is that IF you do CP only, you absolutely MUST succeed in research (as I am told) because the non-academic jobs in CP only is pretty skimpy if research is not part of your career.

Yes - this is exactly what I am thinking. I cannot decide if I am willing to take the plunge. Like geddy said, it is a trade of time for security. I know I love the lab, but sometimes it seems so uncertain - I can have a good idea and it works out great and turns into a whole bunch of projects, or I can have the same good idea that never goes anywhere. I guess that is what I just have to decide!!

LaDOC - I'm just finishing up my Ph.D., so don't have years and years of research experience, but I don't see it as just "the greater good." I genuinely enjoy it. It can be EXTREMELY frustrating but also EXTREMELY rewarding. I get an incredible rush when I get an exciting result.

or geddy makes some wild claim that chicks dig dudes with CP.
I'm not falling for that again 🙂

If you are still on the fence, though, why not try AP only first, get some research done, see how it goes, and if it fails, then sign on for two more years of CP. I figure if you wait the extra two years before you get the research started you are just about toast. That's why I am doing AP/NP, will get me research started in PGY2 and then in my fourth year if it seems a bust there is then the option to sell out and get CP.

BTW... I don't care how much money I make, my kids are going to a top rated state college and not wasting 5 times the money for the exact same education at an Ivy league. Skippy I'm wit it. :horns: :horns:

I didn't think about that - duh, pretty dumb of me. I thought it would be much harder to go back and get CP, but this is a good idea. Of course, waht if your research tanks 5 yeras out of residency?

Rock on, man... I just want my kids to get a good education, not an uber-expensive college degree.

Here's what I like about research: You dictate what you do in your job more than the job dictates what you do. Relative intellectual autonomy is priceless.

Clinical work: I will always always ALWAYS see it as a JOB. A breast, colon, or testicle comes my way. I have to look at it and sign it out. The JOB dictates what I do.

Dude, do we live in the same sociocultural timespace? Last time I checked people were shooting mother fkers for Nike shoes, let alone eye balling each other's credentials.

I realize state maybe as good, heck even better, than Yale. But dat wont a get a brother a good job and a hot wife biotch.

Its life, it sucks but its one big game we all playin. Some of us are destined to stay close to the ivory tower and eek out an existence discovering the protein that makes worms want to take a dump, others will follow a different path, cruising off into the sunset in a black M5 with tinted windows and giant shat-eating grin on our faces...

That's a chance I'm gonna have to take [he says in his best Clint Eastwood voice].

Good question... they end up doing a whole lot more autopsies?

Here's another question... In the private practice arena at the big companies like Ameripath, do they hire AP onlies? I am thinking why not? I am sure there is no CP call do be done, or am I wrong about that? 😕 😕

Then again, part of me agrees with you. The best you can do is make a well-informed decision and be prepared to accept the consequences of your actions. It feels kind of cowardly to always be hedging my bets. Eventually, I'll have to commit one way or another and then go for broke.

I like planning things and achieving closure... All this posting about research planning and options is very therapeutic, though 😀

I think posting about research planning is detrimental for me. I had this whole plan laid out and written in stone. Now y'all makin' me question things

Almost every day, I lay out a plan and set it in stone. The next day, I lay out a different plan and then set that in stone. 😀

i pick the second one...she'll do AP/CP, do private practice path, makes tons of money. she can be my sugar-momma.

ok now what would you rather do?
(a) lick a bum's nutsac.
(b) have intercourse with your mom

I showed that model to yaah in a chat once and he didn't find her attractive.

Hmmm. Heard somewhere that Yaah prefers checking into hotel rooms with Andy "Suitcase" Milonakis in a.... suitcase. For what ensues, you'd have to check with respective parties...
