8 yrs ago, Jimmy was three times as old as Anne, In 4 yrs, Jimmy will be 3/2 of Ann''s age.

Jeff is two yrs younger than Carrie. 12 yrs ago, Carrie was twice as old as jeff. How old is Jeff?

Steve is twice as old as Sylvie. Sylvie is three yrs older than Jacob. 4 yrs ago, Slyvie was twice Jacob's age. How old is Sylvie?

ok, some knowledgeable person PLEASE check these, cuz im not too great at these problems myself, but heres what i got.

For the first one, J - 8 = 3 (A - 8), J + 4 = 3/2(A + 4)

For second one, J = C - 2 , C - 12 = 2 (J - 12), so Jeff is 14 yrs old.

For third one, T = 2S, S = J + 3, S - 4 = 2 (J - 4), so Sylvie is 10 yrs. old.

again, someone please post answers cuz i wanna know if i did it right.. i could be 100% wrong on these..

yep the answers are right

The ability to put word problems into algebraic functions is KEY to a good score in the QR section. Both times I took the DAT there were at least 5 questions that ended up being straight up algebraic word problems.
Also remember to check your answers to see if they make sense. It's WAY easy to make careless mistakes in the short time alotted for QR.

Guys, If your having problems with these questions dont worry, the easy way to figure them out is taking the answers and working it backwards. try it.

i agree....for these types of questions, it's ALWAYS easiest to take your answer choices, and try them all one at a time...

i usually start with the middle choice...and then if it's wrong, i'll have a clue whether or not the age needs to be higher or lower...

it's not worth solving algebra for these when the answer is right in front of you..

It may be faster ! I haven't tried this technique for this kind of problem yet but it's worth trying ...
