UMDNJ has been in the paper 3 times for scandal and corruption since I started applying to dental schools.... First it was dental students cheating by buying credits from older students... then it was some chairman letting his daughter into the medschool out of pure nepotism...and now its "UMDNJ double billing medicaid/medicare"!!!

What is going on??? Should I still consider going to this school? What do you guys think? What if I wanted to specialize? Would my chances decrease because of UMDNJ's declining reputation? Would it effect my future office business? 😡

Tell me!

tell me about it man. I got my masters there and then worked in the oral biology lab there for another 8 months. Reading the NJ Star Ledger newspaper and seeing that crap throughout last spring and the summer was quite painful and embarrassing. I have no idea about how this will hurt the reputation of the school, but it definitely can't do any good!

Man, scandals spread like wildfire here in SDN. A few years ago, it was NYU (back then a really good school, until 9/11 and overaccepting students). Now UConn and even more recently UMDNJ.

what happened to NYU in regards to 9/11? Was it just the school is in the city or was it something more direct?

My bad. Not really a scandal. More like many applicants become scared of applying/going to NYU after 9/11. In fact, St. Vincent's Hospital of Manhattan (which by the way, is bankrupt and very likely to close down), which serves as the main hospital World Trade Building victims, is only a few blocks away from NYU undergrad.

I applied there and had an interview. I think that the only concern students who go there should have are whether the school remains open or retains their accreditation. I am also concerned, since this school was appealing to me and not as costly as others. I don't think anything will happen to the school regarding those mentioned concerns. Regarding reputation, most patients will not even think about where you went to school, as long as you're a doctor; unless you live in New Jersey. Then, you may have some explaining to do. Additionally, I don't think that the scandals will be an issue 4 years from now. There is a hype now, but give it a couple of years and it wont even cross people's minds. Just pray for UMDNJ. God bless. 😉

I must say that this thread is not as spicy as UConn. The UConn threads simply overshadow this one. . . which means, it's good for UMDNJ.

do you guys know if umdnj's reputation is really compromised? i know at the interview the students spoke about it and how it was "in the past" and the accreditation thing is nothing to worry about. but is it?

In the past? They were in the paper again last week! For doublebilling and retaliation!👎

damn this totally sucks. Why do they keep doing this??? And don't they have a state auditor now that double checks everything? Did he also miss this?

I don't think it would hurt your chances of specializing.

I believe that some of the posts regarding UMDNJ scandal newspaper articles are implying that there are still scandalous activities going on. These newspaper articles are referring to recently uncovered activities that had occurred in the past. Operations now, at the school, are fine. Expect to see more since investigations are ongoing. All of these activities have to come to surface in order to alleviate the problem. Hopefully, there won't be much more. It's too bad that this had to happen at a good school like UMDNJ. I like the school and wouldn't mind going there. My only concern is accreditation. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which is the accreditation agency for UMDNJ, currently has UMDNJ on probation. I actually emailed the ADA to check on the status of the schools accreditation. As of now, they are accredited. Here is a copy of the email:

RE: UMDNJ New Jersey Dental School

Dear _____:

The accreditation status of the dental education program sponsored by the UMDNJ New Jersey Dental School has remained at "approval without reporting requirements." The Commission is, however, monitoring the activities of the institution's accrediting agency, Middles States Commission on Higher Education.

I understand that UMDNJ is under fire with recent scandal issues and am inquiring about the dental school's accreditation status. Has it been affected?

Thank you,

I hope this helps someone understand a little bit of what's going on. 😉

I'm looking for more information regarding the scandal and its affect on the NJDS. We'll see what happens.

Jersey is a scum hole, if the smell around the sound is any indication of the level of education provided at the dental school, than that place might as well close up
