After some searching, it seems as though we don't have one of these threads in the pre-dent world. I've seen some on the med forums. Also, seeing as how things have been quiet lately, I figured we could use the humor. I'll go first.

You know what really grinds my gears? The DAT is just that. The Dental Admission Test. Test. Not tests. It is singular. Why do so many people say "When should I take my DATs"? I was not aware there were multiple "Dental Admissions Tests" that you had to take. Or, are you just planning on taking it multiple times? And on that note, yes, you most definitely TAKE the DAT. You do not WRITE it, the people that create the test do. (sorry Canada)

:laugh::laugh:

Next?

Yeah, well, I sat the DAT.
Touché. Well, "sitting" for a test is more acceptable in my book, haha. At least it makes sense. You sit down to take the test.

It grinds my gears when people post wondering where their interview invites are and their DAT was uploaded like 4 days ago. Give the school some time people...

My reaction for such threads:

The guy that comes over from the med forum saying he had a life epiphany and now he wants to do dental. Not because dentistry is a better field, though. O no, he/she also explains that dentistry will be much easier to do than med. And that DAT? Please, they had that MCAT on lockdown so no need to study for that little ole' thing.

!! Yes

What grinds my gears is that I submitted my app coming up on three weeks ago and some schools are only now stating they have received it. Not that it is under review, but that it has been received...I understand it takes some time to review, but three weeks to ackowledge it has gotten there? I got three rejections already in the time it has taken the rest just to check their mailbox. P.S. - thanx Nova and Midwestern AZ & IL for the quick turn around on the decision (they could smell the stink from my app without even opening the envelope I guess)

You know what really grinds my gears?

When people spell the word "tomorrow" as "tomarrow." It drives me absolutely up the wall.

PS. Thanks for creating this thread. It's the only one on SDN that makes me happy.

What grinds my gears is when my pre health advisor tell us pre med/dent/ w.e that we need a 4.0, perfect test score, we have to be out going, we need 100 volunteer hours, we need to be buddy buddy with our professors, we need to take 18 units all science classes, we need work experience, we need shadowing, we should be an EMT, and the best part is she only has her MBA....business!! No Dr. in front of her name! Ahhhhhh

My pre-health advisor was totally the opposite. He is a Ph.D. of biochemistry but he likes to give us advice instead of lecturing about perfection. He does tell us obviously that better grades etc are awesome and up your chances but if your grades are mid 3s or lower to kill the DAT and focus on experience instead. He also told me to write my first draft of my personal statement while extremely intoxicated as that is how he wrote his for grad school...Lol. I like that advice. 😀

Yup. These too:

"Definately" vs. definitely
Weather vs. whether
They're / their / there
Your / you're

I thought people had these down in, like, fourth grade.

I saw someone post a FB status yesterday saying:

[Boyfriend's name], I am so happy to be your's.

YOUR'S? YOUR'S? That is NOT A WORD.

What really grind my gears...

"Yay, I can't believe I got accepted to (insert awesome school), I have an 18AA and a 19TS, so I was really nervous! But, YAY!!!"

::Always withing the next four comments::

"Are you a URM?"

Yeah me 2 haha! People are messed up

You know what really grinds my gears, when I tell people I'll be attending dental school and they ask me, "oh to be a dental assistant?" Er, no.

You know what really rustles my jimmies? All these stupid SCHOOL VS SCHOOL threads. There is something called a search button which will list possibly 100s of these threads. Besides everyone is going to give their own bias opinion about the schools.

I got really bothered when people said "I wrote the DAT." No you didn't. Betch you took the test. You didn't write it.

It's a matter of preference but STILL.

Yup. I agree - I said the same thing in the first post on this thread. Drives me insane. I think it's a Canadian thing, haha.

I like this one! Idk which is worse when people are surprised that they get in with an 18AA or the URM part. Folks an 18 isn't all that bad and the URM part doesn't mean you get an acceptance letter!

JaeDRa threads.

Not grinded...not even rustled...more like amusedly perturbed.

I am perturbed by pre-med students assuming that pre-dents are med school rejects. Or, the ones who assume the DAT is far easier than the mcat, and we all are taking the easier way out.

Being URM actually does have considerable amount of weight in the application process. It just sucks to automatically be assumed you are URM because of your 18DAT and 3.1GPA.

... thinking, writing, being productive and sometimes also breathing. 🙄

What really grinds my gears is waiting... and reading revisionist history books. Many of the books in the US are so altered from what really happened that not even the Soviets were anything close to their amount of censorship and rewriting of history. I would know Im from there.
Example: reading an encyclopedia from 1911 gives a wholly new perspective on the past that the present ones censor.

People that. put their freakin, commas and' apostrophes in really strange, and, improper places.,.

This and "dentists aren't real doctors"

I just call it "DATs" cause its multiple tests all taken in 1 sitting....

What grinds my gears? A lack of oil in the transmission or diff. That, and stupidity. 👍

When a current D1 volunteers to answer questions about the university (in front the dean at the interview) then doesn't email you back. :poke:

Seriously. I think both professions are hard in different ways; one shouldn't be considered less than the other in any aspect.

Also really peeved when my pre-med friends say, "Why are you worried about getting into dental school? It's not like it's med school or anything..." 😡😡😡

I get this all the time. Are you female btw? I think being young and female has something to do with it 🙄 I tell people I'm applying to dental school. They ask where. And then follow by telling me I should just go the the junior college dental assisting program -- it's cheaper.

Thanks.

What really grinds my gears is...

When someone is listening to you while you talk/tell a story and they have a drink in hand... and the drink has a straw.

For some reason, they refuse to even look at the straw to keep eye contact with you. So, when they go to get a drink (not looking at the straw) they miss their mouth completely... And they keep searching for it. Missing the straw more and more each time... Eventually (still not bothering to look) they start to use their tongue.

Kills me. haha!

That kinda greases the gears !! 🙂

Yes, LOL I hate that (however, it may be because I still look like I'm 14). You can get a dental assisting certificate online 😡

So...

you took your DAT? Where to?

Or, the ones who assume the DAT is far easier than the mcat.

honestly, the DAT is far easier than the mcat. it's just a completely different beast. your score on the DAT is arguably proportional to how much you studied whereas the mcat score is not, since simply knowing everything there is about chemistry and biology and physics will not guarantee you dont get a weird passage.

pre-professionals need to learn to be happy with the profession that they've chosen. at the end of the day, if you can provide for your family and you yourself are happy with your choice, who cares if Dr. OB/GYN thinks you took the easy way out. leave the ego to the wall street boys

Oh my goodness. I can relate to ALL of these! Lol But the worst for me is people's ignorance of the process of becoming a dentist and/or assuming I'm talking about becoming an assistant. I'm a hygienist and I've been asked while cleaning someone's teeth if I was going back to move up in the field and become an assistant. Really? Smh I am so surprised at how few people I come into contact with have any idea that dental school is 4 years and is pretty much med school for teeth...they think it's something I can do part time while working at the office or that it's a 1-2 year program. I had a girl ask why I couldn't just do dental school online..."I'm sure there are programs online for that." Are you? And you'd really want me working on your mouth after I graduate from that? Lol

Well, there is no denying that it's cheaper.

Does anyone else get annoyed when some people in lecture ask really obvious questions or questions that can quickly be answered with Google or when some people raise their hand and say a random fact in an attempt to impress the professor?

I feel the same way. The DAT is just plug-and-chug and regurgitation. With the MCAT, there's more cross-curricular and intricate problem-solving involved.

It's good to know that in the real-world, there is no belittling of other professions.

YESSS!!! This drives me crazy. People do this all the time in my Med Micro class. I think that most of the time they are just trying to impress the professor. Just google that crap, or go to office hours and ask your random question. It is really pointless in my Med Micro class especially because the professor is foreign and doesn't ever really understand what they are asking anyways.
