other than grades, DAT, there should also be a common sense exam 😀

1 ) So in my Biochem class, for the first exam we are allowed to bring a white piece of paper and we can write anything we want on it and use it for the exam (kinda like a cheat sheet). For the exam we r required to know the structures of all 20 amino acids, including their initials and Pka values and everything. So yesterday my friend came to me and he was freaking out over the exam.

He was like "man, i cant memorize all these structures and numbers, I think I am going to fail".

I replied "well why don't you put all that info on the cheat sheet"

He said "Oh shoot I didn't think of that, I should go put those on the sheet also, thanx man" 😀😀😀 i'm sorry but this was just too funny. This kid is actually a genius, he has like a 3.8 gpa or something.

2) My teacher was going over the syllabus over a projecteor again since the exam was coming up
I'm telling you guys, this girl in front of me, WROTE DOWN EVERY SINGLE word from the syllabus on her paper. I dont know I just shook my head, i mean if u r a Junior or Senior, you should know by now the syllabus gets posted online.

3) My lab partner, smart kid gets good grades. He told me he took the DAT last month and now he is going to take the PCAT. I said "why u taking both"
He said "Well, whichever exam I score better in, I'm going to apply to that corresponding school" :meanie:

(I am not claiming to be a genius)

If someone wants to be a Dentist or doctor, i believe you must have a certain sense of common sense. Obviously grades matter but you need more than that. I met so many smart kids during my undergrad, but I just cant imagine them becoming a role model in society. I know this one guy, when he talks, you cant hear %^&*, I'm just curious how he did in his interview 😀

This is funny to me because I know people exactly like who you are describing. Somehow they seem to get by though without klutzing their way to death lol 👍

haha i know the feeling. I had an acquitance studying for the DAT tell me he was gonna outscore my score... only to wind up getting a 16 in RC  and scoring a lower AA than me.

Common sense is worth more than a high IQ 😀

I think everyone bumps into people like this.

By the way, I seriously envy you for your biochem class. Biochem I is all about memorizing reaction sequences and chemical structures. It would be crazy easy if you were allowed a full page cheat sheet!
I had to really cram for that A. 😛

+1 to that lol. I had my first biochem exam of the semester and holy shiz was it hard. The average was ridiculously low. I barely got average and I've never been happier. At least I know what to expect next time and HOPEFULLY things will get better. I've heard of people failing who really tried to pass and while that scares me, I just gotta keep on truckin'.

By the way, I think common sense comes in all forms…I've been told multiple times by my mother that I lack common sense, but ever since I got in college, I feel normal 😛

Yea I agree. Biochemistry would be a joke if a cheat sheet was allowed lol!

And we all run into people like this lol. It's pretty amusing.

thanks for guys not bashing me

i mean c'mon if u could bring a cheat sheet, why wouldn't u put the structures on it instead of bitching about memorizing it

This is why there are STANDARDIZED admissions tests in this country.

There are people like this everywhere. I wonder how some of them made it into college.

There was a girl in my A&P class who didn't know what an atomic number was.....after we learned/teacher talked about it/still didn't know what it was.....lmao

We are allowed a cheat sheet in physics too..you can write whatever you want. People still failed...it's unbelievable sometimes.

Congratulations!

You've officially witnessed the IQ bell curve in action.

Moving right along...

Also, there is a difference between book smart and street smart 🙂
I have a friend who has goldfish memory when it comes to everything but for some damn reason, he does amazing well on tests! Go figure~

lol, I have no common sense but am book-smart. I was told that there are more than a few students who do well in the didactic portion of d-school (1st 2 years) and then have no idea what's going on once they get into the clinical portion. Sounds like a problem that I'd have, lol.

Eh I feel like common sense doesn't really exist. If you really think about it how is common sense actually measured and defined. How could you test it. IMO, What everyone is talking about, when they're talking about common sense, is, people who are just like them. So, just because someone reacts the same way you would have, you think he has good common sense. But someone else might be thinking that reaction was stupid. So there is no real common sense.

This is a post full of common sense.

I feel that I rely much more on common sense than I do on book smarts. I'm smart, sure, but there are way many people out there who are far, far smarter than I. The ticket to my success has been my "common sense" and work ethic lol. I do wish I had more book smarts sometimes though... Can't have everything i guess 😀

Then whatever that scenario was, had nothing logical about it.

Lol I doubt you'd be that bad.

Although I have seen d-students getting panic attacks prior to seeing patients for months when they get into clinic. Not to mention terrible bed side manner.
