You know you're broke from the application/interview cycle when...

make sure you have exact change for the subway, so you don't lose those 50 cent(s).

When you get a Mc job because you NEED the employee discount.

You hold off on buying new shoes until your current ones are literally falling apart. And then hold off some more because the sole is still mostly intact, and enough of the top remains to hold them on your feet for most daily activities. And then hold off some more because you can fix them with duct tape.

When you sit in your hotel, waiting til 11 PM, because they hand out free cookies in the lobby at night...

When you eat a banana for lunch at the airport.

When you save your lunch from the interview so you can have dinner later that day.

i have done every. single. one of these things. except for saving my lunch. they left out the leftovers so i just snuck some snacks in my bag for dinner :meanie:

hilton cookies = boss. also, even before this process, i would make meals for airport/plane snacks because it's ridiculous to me to pay $8 for a sandwich that I could have made much better. plus i eat a lot 😳

 What is the point of this thread? Is this just a way for you guys to brag about how many interviews you have gotten, because it sure seems like it.

OMG I got 12 interviews :wow: I am soooo broke now, like OMG :scared:

😴

Calm your horses. I'm pretty sure the thread turned into a bit of a joke, like when BHaus mentioned poophotdogs. At any rate, that certainly wasn't my intent. People can be broke from all the primary/secondary fees they've paid, not necessarily all the interviews they've had...

broke from application/interview cycle clearly means application fees AND/OR interviews. Be cool 😎

That's not nice. I was broke to begin with....and just got more broke. Also, I think it's wrong to assume all of us had a bunch of invites. E.g. I live in a small city in a state that is not so popular. I have to fly to Philly for an interview. ONE interview's flight cost and hotel stay makes me broke.

I am sorry guys. I had a rough day in lab and I have been taking it out on everyone around me all day. I apologize. I wish you all the best of luck in this process.

Forgive me? :hello:

Whoa there killah'! The point of this thread was NOT to brag about interviews. If it was, I would have called it "I was invited to XX interviews and you weren't." That's not in my character anyways.

In reality, it was supposed to be a funny and somewhat cynical thread to see what other peoples experiences have been. I am from a state that is practically void of medical schools in comparison to states like NY and CA. That said, I have had to fly to my interviews which can get very expensive, especially on short notice.

Thank you for apologizing, though, and I hope your day gets better!🙂

...you just broke open your piggy bank and traded your coins in for cash. 🙁

And Yes, I just did that last week - it was all $1 coins though, so it will cover expenses for a couple of interviews 😀

You can't wait for thanksgiving in order to have a meal that does not have ramen noodles or 99cent mac n' cheese.

...when you eat eggs for breakfast and lunch because it's a 20 cent meal.

I'm so broke (rent is most of my salary), i usually eat one meal a day, from one of the following options:

1.) PB&J
2.) Hot dog on a slice of wonderbread with american cheese and chopped onion (this is for when i'm feeling really fancy)
3.) tuna salad (just tuna + mayo + relish). sometimes i make toast (if i haven't run out of bread)

This has been my life for the past two years since college.

...

...i'm so lonely

This is the most depressing thread I've ever read.

Makes my $4,000 seem like chump change...:scared:

I'm applying next cycle but studying abroad in London, where numbers are same but in pounds so everything is ~60% more expensive. Some things I have done to save money:

1. Eat egg sandwiches for lunch and dinner(free breakfast at the house I stay in)
2. Refuse to use the tube and walk for 1.5 hours to save 2 pounds
3. Took sandwiches after our house tea party and ate them for 5 days straight (by the 5th day they got really nasty)
4. Starve
5. Unfortunately we don't have too many events with free food on campus, so I steal bread from breakfast and eat jam sandwiches for lunch (believe me they get old and lack nutritional value for the most part)

Hopefully this will make it easier to part with my money for AMCAS... :xf:

45 here... on another thread i calculated that I'll have spent over $10 grand...

...of money i definitely don't have,

:/

I refuse to count the exact number of schools I have applied to and also how much money I have spend - its just too depressing 🙁.

But hey, the good news is that it's all worth it at the end! 🙂

That must've been one big piggy bank lol. Good luck on your interviews 🙂

Yep, $890 to be exact 🙂. Thanks and good luck to you as well! :luck:

I'm not even applying. I'm just broke.

When I moved in my apartment, I put quarters under two corners of my bookcase so it tilted toward the wall and wouldn't fall. I just took them out today to pay for food. The bookcase can screw itself.

I took a red-eye and then slept at the airport the night before my interview. I changed in the bathroom the next morning and headed to the school...all so I wouldn't have to pay for a hotel.

loool
i want to send you some quarters now

You can still afford the 99cent mac&cheese? I'm down to rice & beans. At least it is a complete protein, right?

You can still afford rice and beans?! Weeelllllll look at mister big shot over here! I'M so poor, I ate my shoes for breakfast (and the shoes were 90% duct tape!). But I still applied to the med schools. All of them. Go figure.

etc ad infinitum

you still had shoes? i sold my shoes for more money for applications. I used to live in a cardboard box near the airport, until i ate the box.

Bullocks, no one is crazy enough to sleep in the airport and change in a bathroom to spare a few coins before an interview.

Either the school was a low priority, or you truly WIN this thread.

EDIT: I would be so impressed if you really did this. I mean, I thought about this a couple times, but I never had the cajones to pull it off...

No, I swear. I totally did this. And then like an idiot I bragged about it that day to the other interviewees. I was so out of it all day, but I was fine for the 20 minute faculty interview.

I even read a blog called "homeless by choice" that had an article on the best places to sleep in different airports. I don't know when I got so pathetic. I used wrinkle release spray for my suit in my suitcase, brushed my teeth, freshened up, the whole shebang--and I looked dang good by the way.

It wasn't a low priority school -- it's only one of two interviews I've been offered so far. I just couldn't bare the thought of paying for a hotel that I would spend less than 6 hours at. I'll let you know if I get the acceptance. The nice thing was that the bathroom was really clean from the night crew working overnight.

someone give this man an acceptance.

I can totally understand the sentiment of the poster who slept in an airport to avoid the cost of a hotel. I have done this many times in the past, however I've never had any luck with good airports, they all have those stupid seats with the arm-rests in between so that you can't get comfortable.

once in London I started chatting with a woman working at a coffee shop who let me sleep on their couches even after they closed 👍

Haven't done this for an interview yet, because I've been taking advantage of people for rides, thus saving a decent amount on travel expenses. Also booked one multi-city flight to cover 3 interviews in 4 days, which probably saved me a good 300.

IDK

Every school should have a student host program that can accommodate nearly all interviewees.

When you get your acceptance taken away because you can't afford the 100 dollar registration fee.

Owkay...some $$ tips for you people from someone that likes to be cheap

Food wise.....

#1, buy a big bag of rice
They last forever and you can do a lot with rice. Easy to make...2 cups of water to every 1 cup of rice, heat to boiling then down to simmer for 20 min with lid on

you can add veggies to it, seasonings, herbs, sauce, meat....I can give you some cheap and yummy hispanic recipes for rice if you want 😉

#2, make ramen delicious
normal ramen is...ehhhh..... add one egg to the boiling water for your noodles and some cheese ...it is good..... thinly slice up some meat that was on sale, cook that up in a frying pan really quick then put on top of the ramen. you can get a lb of beef for $2 and use that (not the best cuts of beef, but so what) or throw on whatever you want to the ramen, also throw in veggies..you can make a very cheap and good snack

STOP EATING OUT, it costs more

Make something like lasagna, but make it big..freeze the left overs...you have dinner for 3-4 nights easily

I like to be cheap and save $$ even when it is not necessary. I don't do stuff like this ALL the time and I never given my family ramen for dinner...but we do that for lunch sometimes
