I am officially old now. So I have a "family doc."

I had a visit today and as I was walking through the halls I came across a guy I know from some committees. He looked beat.

He said, "You know, I have just about had it. I am thinking of seeing if I can find some rural EM job somewhere. After all you guys don't have to worry about these patient satisfaction scores, EMRs asking you to click buttons all the time, and trying to get patients seen by other specialists and the like."

He was absolutely, 100%, completely serious.

Enjoy.

Yes. In his 40's. I always thought reasonably well informed.

Perhaps one of the emerging cases of temporary EMR induced insanity.

You should've said something like, I'm thinking about hanging up my own shingle. I'm sick of seeing patients with chronic pain, poorly controlled diabetes or the worried well. I am tired of explaining to them why they don't need every test under the sun and every new pharmaceutical advertised on cable news.

The other day my GI was complaining about all these publicly traded corporate groups taking over his speciality.

He seemed legitimately surprised that’s an issue in EM too. Extra surprising because his hospital’s ED is staffed by team health and he interacts with them not infrequently.

To be fair this forum acts like all other specialties are a small business paradise.

I interact with lots of physicians all day, every day in a community hospital setting and, aside from the ones that I know are hospital employed (roughly half), I have no f***ing clue who pays the rest of them. Nor do I particularly care.

Yea, but it’s fairly common knowledge that fields like EM and anesthesia are getting bought out by VC.

Only to people that pay attention to the business of medicine. Which, in my experience, is a relatively small fraction of people actually in the business of medicine.

Yea, you’re probably right - I likely have a skewed perspective since business and personal finance fills my ranks of podcasts and audible.
