Just wondering what your average drive time is from home to med school? Particularly those with lengthy drives? Just wondering if anyone else would consider a 2-3 hour drive one way crazy?

About 40 minutes one way.

Yes, that is crazy. I ride a shuttle from my apartment to school, takes about 10 minutes to get there and 20 minutes to get home in the afternoon.

I already feel like there's never enough time in the day... I would hate spending another 4-6 hours driving... I won't even do that on the weekend!

30 minutes. Yeah a 2-3 hour drive is highly unusual. Think of how much studying you could get done in that time.

If you have to drive 4-6 hrs a day, you'll flunk out of med school.

with minimal traffic or at odd hours (early in the AM, late night) = 20 min each way

rush hour = 1 hour each way

sucks, but living with family = zero rent, home cooked meals every night, laundry, and company WHEN i want it. Not a bad deal I suppose.

Same here. Traffic can add 30 min to an hour. You seriously will not be able to study and pass class if you had to drive 4-6 hours per day

What if you meet a nice girl and decide to bring her home that night? 😉

Um, yep. you have a point. Been there before lol. Fortunately the girl has always had her own place, somehow. My current girlfriend lives in a nice apartment on her own near the hospital, so I get to live with her part-time at least. She cooks too 😉

Yes def crazy. Possibly but def crazy. Guess you cld listen to lectures the entire drive so all is not lost.

There are pluses and minuses to living further away from school. I live about a 15-45 min. (depending on traffic) drive away from school, and I'm one of the furthest out. One guy in my class lives about an hour away, and he's repeating first year; so, do with that what you will. People who live further out fall into one of two categories; they either stay at school nearly all day long studying since they don't really have the option of driving back if they go home, or they rush to get home immediately after classes and labs finish (which kills people in anatomy).

One thing to consider is whether you want to be social with your classmates. Most of my classmates live one of three neighborhoods close to the school, and I feel like I miss out on a good deal of socializing. However, if you're the type who is adamant about not letting medical school consume your life and want mostly non-med student friends, people who live further out say they love being able to get completely away from school at the end of the day.

You might be able to pull it off for the first two years, but third year will kill you. I never see my third year roommate because she leaves around 6 AM and gets home anywhere from 6 PM-11 PM depending on her rotation and usually heads straight to her room to study for shelves or go to bed.
