hey everyone, for those of you that have had your interview would you mind sharing your experience?
what was the most challenging question? you don't have to say the school or your answer...

and any advice for the people that have later interviews? anything you wish you would of prepared for?
maybe you forgot to wear some deodorant and wish you did haha

good luck everyone 🙂

"When was the most stressful time of your life and how did you resolve the situation. Also, how would you have handled the situation differently in retrospect?"

I wasn't too happy with this question.

Similar question as above.
Eye contact, good posture, articulate, good handshake, listen carefully to the questions.
And be yourself.

Was this minnesota?

I've had three interviews so far and I would say the biggest help was reviewing the interview feedback section on SDN for each school. Obviously they are all going to ask you the basics - why dentistry, tell me about yourself, manual dexterity, etc. - but it was nice knowing my first 2 interviews were a panel of 4 or 5 people before entering the interview room. Other than that I would just say review your application and be able to expand on any of your activities or things in your personal statement. Just relax and be yourself!

Also, hardest question was probably my view on whether or not there is an access to dental care problem in my state and how specifically I would solve it as a practicing dentist, besides volunteering my time in free clinics.

How did you answer? If you don't mind telling us.

I talked about how I had to break up with my fiancee few months back. I won't go into details but I honestly said there isn't anything that I could have done differently to try to resolve the situation.

I think for this sort of a question the key is to have an honest answer. It does not have to be a tragedy.

Don't wear the rival school's colors the day before they play them as your dominant shirt color. Especially when it's the type of school where the assistant dean is wearing sports paraphernalia while interviewing candidates.

Yup. Honesty is the best policy after all. 🙄

1. what law would you change about dentistry? [i think the interviewer was referring to the dental health care system]
2. why would people dislike you?
3. and the moral/ethical question...what is a moral/ethical challenge you faced in life?
4. what other questions do you have for me? 😴

there is no right or wrong answer, honesty is the way to go... 👍

Never would've thought of that

In reference to the first question, what would be a suitable answer? I've done a ton of shadowing but have not learned much regarding laws. Are we required to have knowledge about such things for the interview?

In her particular interview, no. It wasn't to quiz in-depth knowledge or to trick you. I don't recall the question being about dental laws, though. I thought it was just any law in general. NEVER take it to a political level. Keep it simple, neutral, and move on.

theres an interview feedback section for each school on SDN? what haha where?

I also would like to add a question. For the essay process would anyone be willing to share the question they were asked or the kinds of questions they ask? Even if it is from a previous cycle or not the actual question but the gist I would really appreciate it. I was talking to a few dentists at this volunteer clinic I did and they told me the only reason you write the essay is to ensure you wrote your personal statement-has anyone else been told this? Thank you in advance.

Even if it was, it would be really hard to gauge whether one actually wrote a personal statement or not from an on-the-spot essay at the interview. I know that personally, my personal statement was edited like 10 times over and it's so much more polished than anything I could have written in a 20-30 minute time frame (obviously...)

I think it's more about how well you think on your feet, rather than a concealed way to see if you actually wrote your PS or not..kind of sad if someone actually couldn't write a coherent 4500 character PS really..

P.S. anything involving the actual interview process is considered confidential and shouldn't be shared on the forums.

So what does that mean about the feedback section?

on the feedback section, there is no information about the questions asked, right? only the survey results.

True you can make that argument. But it's stowed away in a corner where 90% of SDN people don't even know about  And specifics like essay questions I believe weren't mentioned..I mean a look through all the feedback, it's the same thing over and over again, that's pretty much general knowledge to every applicant and interviewee ("why dentistry?" "tell me about your research" etc etc)

There are lists of specific questions that are asked. Keep clicking around!

Haha true, nobody knows where it is!! I agree with you on all counts but couldn't help myself pointing it out 😉

I wrote my own personal statement, but like you I did multiple revisions and the thesaurus my best friend. I am perfectly capable of writing any kind of essay requested. As suggested above, there seem to be a very fine line between what is appropriate to ask on SDN and what is not. I am just a nervous applicant and was in no way trying to put someone's chances of acceptance or mine in jeopardy.

hey guys, i don't want any of you getting in trouble, that is why i said you don't have to mention the school or your response.
I wanted to post this thread because all the other ones i found are from previous years. just like all the other applicants i am just looking for advice and to tell us the most challenging question just in case we get asked a similar one so we can be prepared 🙂

for those of you that have an interview for detroit mercy tomorrow, please let us know how it went 🙂

Go to the articles and interviews tab along the top of SDN and you can see feedback specific to each school.
