So after watching a few surgeries I could not help but feel reassured about my desire to go into surgery when I witnessed music playing in the background in the OR during the surgery, and how it was really up to the surgeon as to what songs to play.

For all those thinking about going into surgery, gimme your "surgery playlist." The top songs that you think would be fitting for the ambiance of your operating room.

I thought it was weird when the surgeon I was watching insisted on playing Van Halen's "Jump" as he cut some guy's knee open.

definitely "Let The Bodies Hit the Floor"

Came to this thread just to see this song posted. Yes, just yes.

Depends on the day, but I'd alternate between fingerstyle acoustic guitarists (Don Ross, Andy McKee, Antoine Dufour, etc.), classical piano (mostly Chopin), and down-tempo electronica (Nosaj Thang)

It would depend on what kind of surgeon I was.

General: Sunday, Bloody Sunday (U2)

Neuro: If Only I Had a Brain (Wizard of Oz)

Ortho: Dem Bones (The thigh bone's connected to the knee bone, the knee bone's connected to the shin bone...)

Optho: I Can See Clearly Now (Johnny Nash)

Nothing comes to mind for plastics, ENT or urology. Any suggestions?

I think most awkward would be John Mayer's "your body is a wonderland."

For Plastics: "Dance: Ten Looks: Three" from A Chorus Line

Cardiothorasic: "I've got you under my skin"

For everyone under general anesthesia: "Dream a Little Dream of Me"

My playlist would start with AC/DC and end with Zeppelin. 😎

I'd probably throw in some Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky every now and then, to be honest.

Chopin, lots of James Newton Howard and also some Thievery Corporation thrown into the mix. So classical, film scores and trip hop.

I have a mix of classic rock on my phone for the OR. But recently I have just randomized my RHCP collection.

basically what the plastic surgeon had going when i shadowed recently with a little more 90's alt.👍 i guess surgeons have great taste in music:laugh:

I remember my first time in the or and this super old surgeon was jamming Young Jezzy. This guy looked like Ben Franklin. Mind............blown
As for music, it would be classical. It helps me concentrate in stressful situations.

chopin nocturnes, beethoven sonatas, and then heavy, fast death metal at full volume set to go off when a patient crashes

👍👍👍 Probably a mix of Blood Sugar, Californication, and By the Way, right? Cause those are by far their best albums (simply because Frusciante is insane).

Paul Ryan? Dat you?

Ah, you caught me! I'm actually going to coerce med schools to accept me because I'll be the VP. I don't know how I'll find the time to study though. 🙄

Nah, he'd just blast Rage At the Machine until they tracked him down and stole his iPod in protest!

I'm not a fan of Rage Against the Machine. I prefer classic rock and jam bands.

Some Chopin Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 would seem fitting.

Metallica dude, that stuff is awesome.

Throw in some zeppelin, and... there's more I gotta think

What? Is this common? The OR I shadowed had no music whatsoever.

I have a theory that no matter how many times you randomize a collection of RHCP songs, you will invariably have to listen to them sing about California every other song at minimum.

Depends on how big of a Chili Pepper fan you are. If you only put their hits/semi-hits on a list, ya I'd say it is pretty high percentage CA songs. But if you put entire albums on, it drops a bit 😉. But then you get a lot more sex and drugs (if that is possible) which may be a little inappropriate depending on the culture of your institution XD.

Haha, wow, that was an incredibly embarrassing typo. Oops. I wish I could blame it on autocorrect, but I don't think my laptop has that feature!

I was referring to this, though:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/13/u...be-life-of-paul-ryan.html?_r=4&pagewanted=all

and the followup by the band:

Gucci mane, 2 chainz, Future, Meek Mill, and Drake.

Seriously... is this even allowed anymore? I really need to shadow a general surgeon!

A mix of Soundgarden, Metallica, Nirvana, and Guns N Roses.
Ice Cube and other West Coast rap.

I usually prefer 80s and 90s music.

Mostly Queen, AC/DC, and Foo Fighters with some RHCP, Avenged Sevenfold, and Offspring thrown in there. I also have an instrumental rock/metal playlist I listen to while studying that I'd probably add in like this:

all nickelback

Are you trying to see if your patients are actually out or get them to attempt suicide while under?

@punkedoutriffs possibly Kashmir by Led Zeppelin?
