Hey,
So I am having trouble with class II amalgam contacts being too heavy. One of the requirements by the school is to get floss through the contact, and I usually cannot.

I am using the smallest wedge we have, and I don’t burnish my matrix band anymore because I thought that might be what is causing the issue.

Any tips would be helpful

Try using a larger wedge and when burnishing, don't burnish the entire matrix band. I usually will use the ball instrument and place a firm contact onto the adjacent tooth. Also ensure that your matrix band is wrapped around the restored tooth nicely. Bulky embrasures will also make it difficult to floss.

Pediatric contacts: broad and flat
Adult contacts: more pin point like

Are your marginal ridges coincident? Do you have well contoured embrasures or is the contact broad and flat? Not re-creating natural anatomy could lead to heavy contact
