If you can arrange your trip so the badlands are on week days you should do it as the park can get fairly empty. With less people there it feels even more otherworldly.

Crowd size doesn’t impact Rushmore as much so fit that in whenever.

And just be a tourist and hit up Wall Drug. Yeah it’s a bit tacky but its fun and there’s often some good people watching.

Love the Black Hills. Custer state park. Spearfish Canyon. Rushmore. Badlands. Mammoth site in hot springs. Would also recommend driving over to devils tower if you can as it is one of a kind.
