Do extracurriculars really matter?

If it is all about the numbers, do the extracurriculars/shadowing hours matter? I guess it comes in handy when two similar candidates are compared?

i think it's all about the extracurricular activities. The numbers are just a foot in the door (which obviously you need) but what gets you in are all the other things.
