HELP! step 2 cs patient note

I have been hand writing all my notes until today when I started using the usmle template but then I run out of characters by the time I start the social history. I can type up the physical exam with out a problem. Can you guys please give me some tips as to how I can shorten my notes, specifically the HPI? Also when they say 950 characters do they mean 950 words or 950 letters?

use abbreviations. Be concise. Don't include extraneous information.

Characters = letters, punctuation marks and spaces.
