I pulled this off of Cafe pharma lab sales for the Brl/Genpath board. Average net is 150-175K

They often make a lot more the pathologists.
If you can't find a job in pathology you can go into sales!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the bottom line truth:
The NJ guys make $500k up to AW's rumored $1.1mil.
The guy in Miami makes like $300k, maybe $400k.
The guy in Chicago makes like $250k, maybe $300k.
The guy in DC makes like $400k.
A few other markets have big shots in the $250k range.
But most Terr's have reps in the comfy $150k-$175k range, and that's not bad.
Some tough markets (out west) are struggling to make $90k, and that sucks.

*best advice: if you have relationships and live in a big market, you can win big. If you don't, then you won't.
**management advice: put on you your big boy panties cuz they don't f$!k Around. Grow your business or be gone

So, then the average salesperson makes more than the average pathologist (let alone a "lot" more)? Call me skeptical.
While I'm sure there are individual salespersons who do very well, its probably fairer to say that MOST often, pathologists make more money than salespeople!

Well, you could try, though if you're actually good at sales, then why can't you sell yourself into a pathology position somewhere?
Isn't this basically the exact same thing. . .making a sales pitch to some pathology group?

Why is this is the "truth"? Because someone posted it on a message board somewhere?

Agreeing purely for the sake of argument that there are individuals who make over $350k/year selling pathology stuff, how many of them do you think there are in the entire United States? 30? 100?
How competitive is it to get one of these jobs?
Do they make this amount year in and year our, or only during exceptional years?
Do they have any job security at all?
How many pathologists (let alone new pathology residency grads) do you think are even capable of being high-level salesmen? Without trying to be mean here, most pathologists aren't "people persons".

Holy crap this post is requiring me to comment.

Do not consider going into sales unless you've lost your medical license. While the pay CAN be good, lifestyle is horrid and the very things that make it difficult for pathologists to get good jobs (not good at socializing, speaking English) are the same traits that will keep you from doing well in Sales.

If you go into sales expect to:

1) Live either in a van down by the river or on an airplane
2) Struggle to see your family on a regular basis
3) Learn how far your nose can go up strangers' *sses
4) Become paranoid and superstitious
5) Sit around Drs' offices and wait. and wait. and wait. and, oh, sorry, appointment is cancelled.
6) Be canned if your figures do not meet expectations- this may or may not have anything to do with your skill as a salesman
7) Be canned for 1,000 reasons, which include (but are not limited to): Change in leadership, change in company direction, being acquired by another company, acquiring another company, discontinuing the product you are selling (even if you could sell other products), you pissed off the wrong customer, you pissed off the wrong executive, and many others. This leads to #4 above

Now, sales can have it's perks. Expect to eat out at a lot at fancy restaurants, and get lots of miles on your favorite airline. You may even find someone that cares that you made the 1K or Global Services or whatever on your carrier. The travel gets old quick.
