the marine corps is purely a fighting force. they have no time to have their own dentists, physicians, or even nurses. thats why they have us in the Navy...we take them there and fix them when they are broken.

The Marines are also a department of the Navy. That might help you understand why they don't have their own medical corps. They also don't have their own medics like the Army does. Navy corpsman are the medics for Marines.

roger that jim...i should have started with that. while the Marines are within the DON, they also have their own command chain and a seat on the Joint Chiefs. they are considered the 'green' side to the Navy 'blue' side. (the Marines also miss their dental appointment with startling regularity)

So let's say you're in the NAVY and do the HPSP through the Navy. If you choose to be stationed with the Marines, rather than Navy would you still be in the Navy? Or would you be a Marine dentist at that point through the Navy?

you would still be in the Navy, you would always be in the Navy. there is no such animal as a Marine Corps doctor, dentist, pharmacist, nurse, or medic. Navy docs that go 'green side' serve in dental (or medical) battalions, able to earn the fleet marine force warfare pin, but are all USN personnel.
