I'm reading MTB2's Gastro section, and I've come across something that caught my attention, which is a blue box that states that combination therapy has not been proven to be more effective than monotherapy in the treatment of chronic hep B - but what about viral resistance?

I learned in school it's because of the desire to prevent viral resistance that we use a multidrug regime.

there is no effective treatment for eradication of HBV yet. the current indications for use of antivirals in chronic HBV are pretty soft and revolve around trying to prevent HCC and such. yes you use multidrug therapy in HIV and HCV but that's because we know we have a much better chance of reducing complications (HIV) or cure (HCV) if we do so.

why bother using more drugs and causing more side effects if it doesn't make any difference?

anyone want to share updated treatment recommendations for Hep B and Hep C?

Are these correct

Hepatitis B: IFN-α, lamuvidine + adefovir
Hepatitis C: IFN-α, ribavirin (+/- HCV rotease inhibitor)
