Major congrats! How did you find out so soon? And how do you know that the other MD-accepted applicants are accepted MSTP too? I thought the MSTP didn't notify until March. I fall into the group that hasn't heard from the MD committees, so does the MSTP wait until the MD committee has sent their decisions before notifying about MSTP status?

Congrats again, and thanks for the info.

Thanks for asking the questions I wanted to ask as well. I was under the impression that all the MSTP candidates were supposed to be reviewed during the Feb MD adcomm meeting. I guess that's not the case.

Also, a huge congrats to Ariodant and all of those lucky four who already know they're in at UCSF.

Congrats, Ariodant; and if you know the answers to the questions Solitude has asked I would appreciate knowing as well.

I don't think I fall into either group of post-interview applicants: the MD committee has deferred making a decision on my application until late April, after all interviews are over. :( Hopefully this won't have any bearing on my MSTP status...

Boo sorry to hear that Dodo :(. Why did they defer a decision on your application until April, are you on the high waitlist??

The letter from the MD adcom doesn't call it a waitlist but a "high priority" list, whatever that means. Other MD-only applicants have also received this letter; it sounds like we didn't make the first cut, but the MD adcom is going to compare us with the remaining interviewees after all interviews are over.

I'm just glad I didn't get rejected outright. :scared: It's a tough school to get into from out of state.

Yeah I'm sure you'll pull through. I remember they said that ultimately half of the applicants in your boat end up accepted, so you still have good chances. And it's not like you won't have other options just in case :p.
 
Thanks everyone. The MSTP committee has met today, and since only four candidates have received MD acceptances, they basically deliberated over them, and maybe took a look at people already rejected by MD to see if there's anyone they wished to pull out, and put everyone else on a list and sent it to the MD committee. If I remembered correctly, the MD committee will hold a special meeting one candidates on the list and send their verdicts back to the MSTP committee. After the second MSTP committee meeting is when most candidates will hear about their fate, and that usually happens in March. I think I merely got lucky.

Jana (the program director) called me to break the news. She said she had to make 3 other phone calls, and I assume it's to break the same news. I don't know if they call people for rejection/waitlist, so no, my info is not 100% reliable. I consider myself a humble average applicant, and want to be optimistic for other candidates and prefer not to be the lone accepted for the first round.

Solitude, Dodo23, goldsonic99 and everyone out there, best wishes and good luck. You guys still have a few weeks, may want to send a LOI?

Yeah Mountain Cow... I probably will. I only got three interviews, and UAB was by far the best school out of all of them.

And she said the MSTP office is sending out status updates to everyone not yet accepted, in which I'm sure more details will be included.

I got emory/GA-tech a few weeks ago via email, and UF last week via phone. Still waiting on UCSD, which I'm hoping comes soon.

Interesting, thanks. Jana told us that initially 16 are accepted, and then there's the unknown number (if any) taken off the waitlist. So I think 12 spots are left at this point? So I gather that after the MD committee decides in 10 days, then we'll hear from the MSTP shortly thereafter? Thanks again.

No idea. Jana's exact words are "we will be sending out status letters", so maybe snail mail? But they said my acceptance letter will arrive by email...seriously??? Just email???

Maybe it's 16 for initial acceptance, I'm not quite sure. But there are only 12 spots that's for sure. After the UCSD incident I imagine they would be hesitant to over-accept. But they rank their waitlists, which is around 12 or so, and they invite the top several of them to the revisit as well. Good luck everyone, the two-week countdown begins...:luck:

just for the record, I've heard from at least 3 people that they received e-mails from the MSTP informing them of rejection. So I guess no news really is good news for everybody that hasn't heard at this point? i.e., if we aren't rejected, we're presumably waitlisted or accepted MSTP but still to be reviewed by the MD committees.

They are asking for a quick decision? I can't say I know anything about UNC, but it could just be a tactic in order to gauge your interest. If you need more time, they will probably give it to you.

UCSF vs USC+Caltech...what should I do...The insecurity of non-MSTP and low stipend (21K in LA, really?) sways me towards my home turf, but the thought of missing out on a PhD from Caltech really hurts:( And I don't hate the Trojans at all:scared:

I may make a personal trip to the admissions office this week, and would like to know if people have questions that I can ask on their behalf. Just post your concerns below, they may not be able or willing to answer all of them, but I'll try my best. No promises though:)
