what sort of area do you want your PhD in? I think that alone can really sway you one way or another...

Congrats on USC+Caltech Ariodant! Also, thanks for the offer of asking Jana about our status. I won't ask you about my status specifically, but can you please try to find out when we should expect to hear from them if we haven't yet? It would be much appreciated.
 
Thanks everyone (again). I bumped into one of the committee members today, and he told me that at the last meeting, they ranked 16 (Jana told me 12) candidates as the first tier, and 10 or so more as the second tier, and rejected pretty much the rest. The MD committee will be discussing the first tier at their next meeting (not a special one, sorry), which seems to be this week. They will not necessarily discuss people from the second tier at this meeting, though the person said the MD committee usually tries to speed up reviewing those people whenever possible.

The MSTP committee cannot override decisions by the MD committee, therefore they can only accept people on the first tier approved by the MD committee, and waitlist approved ones from the second tier. When would that happen he's not sure, but it should not be too long after the MD decisions are made. The waitlist will be ranked, but the exact ranking may not be public. Due to UCSF rules, the MSTP committee can only make 16 offers for the first round.

And dodo, the person said he didn't remember anyone from the first tier that was on the MD alternate list...He left the meeting early and might have missed you or didn't remember it correctly. I'm just sharing what I know, don't despair:luck:

Dodo, if you don't mind me asking, was your waitlist from the MSTP or the MD committee? I'm just trying to gauge whether the MSTP committee has already notified the second tier by virtue of sending the waitlist letter, or whether neither the first nor second tier has yet to hear from the MSTP.

No problem. The waitlist letter was from the MSTP. I also independently received a noncommittal response from the MD committee, postponing their decision to April, but that was over 2 weeks ago. Things may have changed on the MD front or they may not; I don't know either way.

OK thanks for letting us know. I don't want to tempt fate, but if your MSTP waitlist is indicative, then presumably only the first tier has yet to hear...

I doubt that the first tier people have been notified. If they got rejected by the MD committee, which apparently happens, then the MSTP "acceptances" would look like a joke. They probably hold off until the MD decisions are out. Solitude, if you didn't get a waitlist notice, then you are likely one of them:luck:

I think that Caltech tends to focus a lot less on therapies. My interviewer was telling me that's their biggest problem with the NIH. Also, Caltech has really long PhDs. In that regard, i think UCSF is a better choice for you.

If you want to work on scientific phenomena and core scientific principles, you can't beat Caltech.

I don't know how much you know about the area, but even though its around LA, you don't live in the Los Angeles, so the stipend shouldn't really be an issue. Its not like living in Manhattan. The Pasadena area is a lot more affordable and pretty nice.

Thanks for the advice. I really like what Dr. Baltimore's lab is doing, but he has long stopped hiring grad students. I will do another round of faculty look-up to convince myself to decline:(

Actually, I'm pretty sure they're done. They certainly made it sound that way when I was there a few weeks ago. Sorry.

Everyone but me seems to believe in these March interviews. They did mention potential March dates when they were sending out their non-invites ("not that we're inviting you for an interview, but which date would you like if we were?") but, talking with the program administrator at the mid-February interview date, she made it sound like the 30-35 they had interviewed up to that point was probably all they would do (though she never said this decision was set in stone). They are a little unconventional and like to do things like invite people in on non-official interview days when they happen to be in Chicago. I also could have just plain misheard her. But, lacking confirmation from someone who knows that they're going in March, I'd be pessimistic about this.

Yes, UCSD definitely stands a chance, particularly because I'm a neuroscience junkie. I have to agree with you, the location is awesome - but, I've also lived and gone to school in California my whole life, so I think a change of scenery could be good as well. Ahhh, decisions, decisions...

Last week the office told me there will be one more. So I was wondering if anyone had been invited......but it seems to late at this point :(

Don't expect anything too soon. The entire MD admissions office is new this year, they are slowly getting through apps. Last year only 2 or 3 were notified in Feb, with almost everyone else hearing back late March and early April. It's a phone call, so don't stalk your inbox.

As for UCSF, since that seems to be another big one people in this thread are waiting for, as far as last year was concerned:

Rejections go out first via e-mail along with placement on the Alternate List. UCSF interviews a good number but ends up accepting only 16 to fill a class of 12, then going to a smallish alternate list (it was 16 people my year) to fill slots as they open up. Accepted students found out later via phone call. I ended up hanging on the MSTP alternate list until May when I got into Yale.

Jana Toutolmin, the administrative assistant there, makes a note of each time that you call to inquire about your waitlist status and express your interest in the program. Jana won't tell you where you are on the list unless you are the next person to be accepted, although she does seem to hint at your relative position (I was somewhere close or in the middle, because she seemed to indicate that she would tell you if your position on the list was low enough that they historically didn't reach it).

Our MSTP is making plans to expand over the next few years, and for the first time this year there will be 12 slots available rather than 10. Consequently, this year about 4-5 more initial acceptances will be sent out than usual. Also, a lower number of students were interviewed this year (~80) despite a record number of applications, so the likelihood of an acceptance post-interview is better than usual. The rank meeting has been held and 25 or so should receive an offer of acceptance at the end of the month. In some years there is little waitlist movement, and in other years multiple members of the entering class come off of the WL. Now would not be a good time to contact the admissions office since rankings are already in place and they won't tell you anything until late March, but if you are waitlisted, be sure to express your interest in attending Yale regularly and all that good stuff.
