Official 2015-2016 Rejections Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If we applied for the primary care and categorical tracks for a program, will admissions specify which track we are getting rejected from or should we assume both if we get a generic email?

Another UCSF rejection today (doesn't really seem necessary to update the list for that), and a UW waitlist.

I'm curious, what do you think the significance of a waitlist is? I know obviously better than a rejection, but can anyone from years before comment on likelihood of obtaining an interview spot from it?

Haha! Love the sombrero. Great clip.

This afternoon the entire west coast rejected me in a giant sequential bombardment while I rounded and then made several courses of quesadillas. Surprisingly, still a good day. Nice to have some closure, at least, and quesadillas. ;)

Keep truckin, everyone. There are still sweet places to go, even if they are cold or their signature food is cheese curds (the best).

Several courses of quesadillas? Sounds like a good day to me too! Does that mean you just made more than one quesadilla or more then one type? Haha.

Oh and @imresapp I got waitlisted at Duke and I have no idea.

Great attitude! I also have received a cold front from the west coast today but in the long run, I appreciate formal rejections versus radio silence.

Yale specified, have not been rejected yet from other places with separate tracks.

I was wait listed at a top 10 program, went on the interview after finally receiving an invite late in the cycle and ended up matching there after ranking it number one. I received an email basically saying I would match there after my interview if I ranked them first so I'm a strong believer in the power to wow via interviews (not tooting my own horn bc I didn't think it went that well).

If money isn't a limiting factor then I would say go for it, but don't be disappointed if you don't match there if you eventually get an interview as the cards still are stacked against you.

I know this process can make you neurotic, but just try to keep a level head.

Haha, one had a few pieces of arugula cooked in before they went bad, but mainly it was just several iterations of the same basic quesadilla. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way! Also rejected from UCSD and UNC with similar stats to bounassezia's with steps in the 250s/260s... all 4-5 advisors I spoke to thought I would match in the top 20. Instead, I'm getting radio silence from places like Colorado, Emory, Brown.... scratching my head on this one. Is everyone all of a sudden scoring in the 250s or something?!

Interesting how now the tide ebb and flow is changing and the second, significant wave of interview invites post-cancellations is finally trickling in. I think the most stellar applicants this year probably over-applied, and the mid-top programs all got starstruck and invited only the tip-top candidates. In doing so perhaps they bit off more than they could chew (/realistically match), and now that those candidates are getting a deluge of invitations and canceling, the trickle-down is finally happening… just very late this year. Nice, though!

This cycle is un-f!!cking-believable.... I looked back on the match list two years ago and there are people with stats way below mine getting accepted to UCSF and I don't even get an interview.... Rejections left and right. I should have never done a PhD. Maybe I should have gone into derm or rad-onc - it's probably a cakewalk to get into rad-onc this cycle with everyone pouring into IM. I would be done 1 year sooner, wouldn't be worried about fellowships, made more money, no call.....

How is this thread helpful? Shouldn't we know the scores for the people being rejected. I mean this would put things into perspective right? and probably help others in the future. For example, today I got rejections from the same programs as everyone else, but maybe I was just dreaming and thought I would get lucky because I have average scores 224/241. But if I see high scorers getting rejections then I have to wonder what is going on.

I don't know. what do you guys think?

It does exist - after match in the good citizens of this forum write all that stuff in the "Official 20**-20** IM MATCH" thread. I get your point about helpfulness, but here people are just venting and commiserating

I also think this information gives me an idea of what's happening at these programs. Now, I know that 1.) I've survived a wave of rejection so maybe I still have a shot and 2.) I know that programs are actively doing something so maybe they'll put me out of my waiting purgatory soon. It's not much, but hey, it's something

I think this thread is quite helpful. It is nice to know when a program has rejected other applicants but left you in limbo (possibly with a chance). Likewise, it is nice to be on the alert in terms of timing of rejections. Last year's thread helped me to know when I might expect to hear *something* from certain programs-- some of these places have followed it to a T, and the patterns have been similar even with the delayed timing this year. Nonessential but cool to know. Also nice to expect which programs may give you the eternal silent rejection. I assume this year's thread may be useful in giving a sense of this timing to next year's applicants.

Furthermore, it is helpful to see that clearly excellent applicants, who are invited to other cool interviews, are also getting miscellaneous rejections, pointing to the very hit-or-miss nature of the process these days (e.g. docforthepeeps, invited to JHH but rejected at some others- sorry to call you out!) Helps to put everything in perspective. You don't need scores and specific stats to notice this trend; look at the other awesome interviews some of these candidates are getting for a better gauge.

Could also potentially be useful in gauging competitiveness for next year's applicants. Based on patterns I saw emerging in last year's threads, including the rather arbitrary rejections of great candidates at some, but not all, 'top whatever' programs, I realized a strong record won't help you to predict where the heck you will and won't get interviews. I realized I had to apply very broadly, and consequently, was one of the few at my school who anticipated this new trend and applied to enough programs to get sufficient interviews in this new climate. Take what you will, but the analysis helped me. (thanks, sdn!)

If you want to know, my scores were 250+/260+ with majority clinical honors. That should give you an idea of how competitive this cycle is ;)

Yes, I see it's very competitive this year. I saw on previous threads that they say last year was also very competitive. Would you say this year is worse?

I am relatively new to the forums and joined after I did step 1 in June. How I wish I looked at the forums last year because the threads are helpful but I am afraid I am a bit late and have already applied in this cycle. (Last year was tough for me, I was pregnant with identical twins). I just have to pray for a miracle that I can match because as an old IMG I am afraid I may have committed match suicide with my CS expected on December 9th. I applied broadly to 188 programs so we'll see....

Who knows. I know that my PD and APD are both surprised at how this cycle is going and have given me the impression that it's unusually competitive. No idea if that's accurate though

I got a few interviews before my CS result was online, so I hope things work out for you. If you got invitations already, there should be no problem. But I understand the nagging "what ifs".

Bad luck for us. My interview list makes no sense either. It looks totally random. I wonder though if this is a real phenomenon related to more students graduating or simply the result of people applying more broadly and clogging the interview pipes.

Both I think. From what I'm gathering, you have more students going into IM that previously wouldn't have, but now that the hospitalist lifestyle is becoming more appealing, it looks like IM is starting to usurp the old specialties. Also, most residencies haven't expanded the number of spots, so more people going for the same number of places. Hopefully, as people start to prioritize, things will open up. I feel like a lot of people overreacted and are holding on to a lot of places, at least that's what's happening with some of my classmates. I think our deans are also feeding into that, by telling us to book every interview at my school =P.

I got rejections from Cornell and NW too (didn't apply MGH). Pretty sure I've been silently rejected from Pitt, GW and Georgetown. I have 250s/270s, all honors and AOA plus national leadership and 8 publications. I know my LORs were excellent bc a high ranked program (1 of 2 that I've gotten) said so at my interview. This cycle makes no sense and I've been very disappointed. Glad to see I'm not alone.

I'm really surprised. To me, your numbers look great on paper. Do you have any red flags? I got rejections from Cornell and NW as well, I did apply to MGH and got an interview there. Maybe the folks that will match at one of the big four, but interview at all top 35 programs will eventually get tired and cancel. Otherwise, I would laugh if a lot of the top programs couldn't fill this year because they interviewed all the same people.

No red flags. Was told by 4 PDs at top places who saw my complete app that I should have no problem and should have my choice of programs. Literally everything on my app is glowing. The only thing I can think is my lower tier school (which was a choice, it was truly the best fit and prob why I've been able to accomplish so much). But yes, I also think the top 20 are interviewing the same 350 people.

....Seriously.....WTF is with this interview cycle...I'm more convinced than ever that programs are simply playing odds to find applicants who will most likely rank them highest. My scores are nowhere near as good as many people here and I haven't been rejected from some of the places that sent out rejections recently, because I bet it's cuz I went to one of them for undergrad and I worked at the other. Granted, I also don't have interviews at either :eyebrow:

+Duke 11/3, twice

I guess they wanted to be extra sure I won't show up. Will make a mental note for my fellowship applications.

Haha, same thing happened to me with Yale. Strangely enough, the two rejection letters were actually different, but basically at the end of the day, said we hate your face.
