Do you have DDS/DMD? How tough is it to get in without a DDS? Any tips for the application will be much appreciated :)
I'm in the same boat my friend :) However, all I know is that there are some schools like boston and tufts who accept a good # of internationals (but the cost is $$$). Staying positive is key at this time :D

When can we expect to hear from other schools?
Is it usually after the Aug 1 deadline?

Really? How so?
Who told you?
Iowa: not enough faculty.
Mn: unorganized, unfriendly, but so many patients.
The program director just graduated in 2016 and 2 residents have been resigned during the last three years. The other residents just want to finish and run away

What is a good number of schools to apply to have a decent shot of matching?

What is a good number of schools to apply to have a decent shot of matching?
Last year I applied to 19 schools and received 11 interview invites. There were a couple others on last years thread that were in a similar situation as me, but also others that got 0 invites. If you have a decent application and apply to 10-15 programs you should be hearing back from a few, although no guarantees. More programs is always better than less. Every year gets more and more competitive, cant really speak on behalf of this cycle...

11 invites are awesome! Any advice for a foreign-trained dentist without DDS applying for perio residency? Is it possible for us to secure admission without DDS/DMD?

Looking out a little, what are anticipated incomes for periodontists immediately out of residency? 3 years out? 10 years? I’ve seen various numbers, but don’t know which is most correct. Student Loan Planner references $80k more per year on average versus general.…

This is a question I’ve been researching a lot since I worked as a GP, was making $300k, and wanted to make sure my time has some return on investment doing Perio.

The answer is not black and white but depends:

1) your personality- are u a content type of person or a go getter? As a past GP, I’ve seen GP’s making $120k- over $600k. How far do you want to broaden your skill set and how courageous are you to implement them?

2) type of practice - owner vs associate vs traveling perio

3) location of practice and referral base (very important)

Don’t just do it for the money. You will most likely earn more than a GP, working 4 days per week. How much more is dependent on you.

Hope that makes sense.
Goodluck!

my recent grad friends are making 100-150k/yr. all 1-2 yrs out.

you need to prove to your GP referrals you are worth referring to. you will spend a lot of time twiddling your thumbs first few years out likely.

or go to the boonies/corps and be immediately slammed with pts

I have a DDS from the states so can’t speak much on that, although I know there are residents with BDS degrees so I know it’s possible. Not sure if schools favour DDS over BDS or vise versa. I know there are a few programs that only take American citizens. Make sure you double check before applying. Best of luck!

Are u aware if Texas programs and Washington prefer people with GRE/ADAT?

Hi!
How important is ADAT/GRE for grad Perio applications?

Appreciate the response!

I very much agree that going into this specialty can‘t be exclusively a money move, but I am having last minute reservations on if it’s worthwhile… Opportunity cost in doing such a program, especially for someone like yourself who was making $300k, is quite literally a Million dollars. Then combine that with PerioDont’s recent grad friends only making 100-150k a year or two out, you’re looking at 15+ years to make up that gap, no?

For as interesting as the procedures are to complete and help patients, it seems difficult to justify :/

But then again, maybe this is last minute nerves and excuses before submitting applications
