Only 3 invites so far.Is there anyone else out there with just 1 interview or am I the only one? Starting to get nervous....
How many interviews does everyone have? What kind of stats do you have?
Every Wednesday Nov 14-Feb 6
Are we still in the 'no news isn't bad news' time period?
When does no response from a program who has already sent out invitations to others become worrisome?
I applied to 65 programs, mostly mid-tier university and communi-versity programs. I consider myself a fairly middle of the road applicant from a not famous midwestern med school.
Stats:
Step I: 231 Step 2: 228 (I'm guessing the lower Step 2 probably hurt me at some of my better programs). Top quarter of my class, all honors 3rd year except in peds. 4 pubmed cited publications as 2nd or third author. Not AOA.
Invites so far: 33
Scheduled: 18
Waitlisted: 1
Rejected: 1
I'd be happy to share specific programs or other data but I doubt people want to see a long list of programs here....
Best of luck to everyone!
Just curious, why did you apply to so many programs? I've got similar stats and applied to less than 40 programs. I was told 25 would be sufficient, but I'm kind of doubting that given that I've only got 7 invites and 2 rejections.

I share the same frustrations, I applied to 40 schools of varied strengths all over the country. I'm at a Big Ten medical school with Step 1- 230, bottom half of the class. Two invites, one scheduled, one wait listed, 3 denies, and 35 I haven't heard back from yet.
What date was your application complete? I don't want to make you worry, but, a 230 on step 1 + big 10 school x 40 programs should result in more than 2 interviews at this point in the season. If your aplication was late then you can count on getting 5 or 6 more interviews. If not, it is very possible that you have a bad LOR.I share the same frustrations, I applied to 40 schools of varied strengths all over the country. When do you stop receiving interviews in surgery? Late october early november?
With your step scores, I would strongly advise to get someone to start making phone calls for you in the next few weeks. Programs are going to want to hear from a reputable person that you are a stronger applicant than you test scores may imply.204/200 from good med school (a top 25 school), likely strong LOR. Applied to 70 programs, 1 interview invite... 6 rejections. Haven't heard from the rest.
What's your take? Should I still have hope? Plan B?
Thanks!
There's more to your story. Your step 1 score is average for surgery applicants, and being in the "bottom half" of your class is not necessarily a dealbreaker. There is something else in your application that is negative (failed classes, time gaps in training, weird personal statement, bad LORs, or possibly an error filling out the application).
Still, there are certain programs that wait for the Dean's letter/MSPE before sending out invites. I think it's worth looking at invite threads from the last couple years (linked by me on the first page of this thread) and seeing which programs are known for late invites.
I think it's impossible to predict this season since the timeline is so different from other years. That said, going by this board, around 15/30 programs I applied to haven't even offered interviews yet. AND judging from the relative timeline of last year compared to other specialties (with Gen Surg historically offering interviews later)... my assessment is that the next two weeks are going to have a lot of action.
here's hoping, anyway...
My application was in 9/15. No Fails, no time between med school, personal statement was reviewed by staff. I have 4 LOR but I only saw 1 before it was uploaded. It would be a surprise to me if they said anything bad or non-enthusiastic. From my perspective, my application process does not smell right. Not really sure what to do though.
One option would be to reach out to the program director at your home program, explain your situation, and see if he/she can shed some light on the situation. However, that may reduce your chances at your home program, and it won't really change anything, so I think I would focus on doing really well with the interviews you get.
If November 1st comes and goes, and your invites are still not rolling in, then it's time to start asking for preliminary positions.
