How many interviews does everyone have? What kind of stats do you have?

I applied to 39 programs, 90% at community hospital-settings, because I figured I was a pretty weak applicant:
I have received 7 interview invites, 2 denials, and I'm awaiting 30 others.

The invites: Spartanburg Regional (SC), ECU (Greensville, NC), Riverside Hospital (Columbus, OH), Baptist (Birmingham, AL), West Virginia U (Morgantown, WV), Providence (Southfield, MI), U Toledo (OH).

The denials: Gundersen Lutheran (La Crosse, WI), U Maryland (Baltimore, MD)

PM me and I'll give you my stats. Hope this helps...

Are we still in the 'no news isn't bad news' time period?

When does no response from a program who has already sent out invitations to others become worrisome?

someone told me after November, but I dont know if is true

I applied to 65 programs, mostly mid-tier university and communi-versity programs. I consider myself a fairly middle of the road applicant from a not famous midwestern med school.
Stats:
Step I: 231 Step 2: 228 (I'm guessing the lower Step 2 probably hurt me at some of my better programs). Top quarter of my class, all honors 3rd year except in peds. 4 pubmed cited publications as 2nd or third author. Not AOA.
Invites so far: 33
Scheduled: 18
Waitlisted: 1
Rejected: 1

I'd be happy to share specific programs or other data but I doubt people want to see a long list of programs here....

Best of luck to everyone!

Just curious, why did you apply to so many programs? I've got similar stats and applied to less than 40 programs. I was told 25 would be sufficient, but I'm kind of doubting that given that I've only got 7 invites and 2 rejections.

So I was a bit paranoid and I wanted to be able to apply to some programs that I knew were a bit beyond my reach without compromising the number of reasonable programs that I applied to....

Also, at our school, our chairman and faculty advisors told everyone to apply to a minimum of 40 programs regardless of stats...more if you were weak, but even the AOA kids applied to at least 40... I'm sure for some folks that was a bit excessive but this is one situation where I'd rather be on the generous side of things.... of course it wasn't cheap...

You got bad advice. Applying to 25 programs is probably not sufficient in the current market. However, 40 sounds about right.....

The old stat was that you needed to interview at 10 places to ensure that you match, and this was based on NRMP data. There's probably updated info available now.

The current dogma at my school is to rank 12 places to make sure you match, although that corresponds to a probability of about 0.93 of matching for US allopathic grads (2011 data).

I don't know, I think it depends on a lot of factors and you can't really set a number that would be the same for everyone. Our school (also midwestern state medical school) told us 25 was a good number and to try to interview at 10. I applied to 26 mid to upper tier schools and have 18 invites and 1 rejection so far. step 1: 239, step 2: 253, top 25% of class, not AOA.

I really think there will be a good number of interviews handed out between now and the first week of Nov, but that's just a hunch. Don't lose hope! We've made it this far, we'll all be good surgeons some day, don't get too frustrated by the process:) GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

I share the same frustrations, I applied to 40 schools of varied strengths all over the country. I'm at a Big Ten medical school with Step 1- 230, bottom half of the class. Two invites, one scheduled, one wait listed, 3 denies, and 35 I haven't heard back from yet.

There's more to your story. Your step 1 score is average for surgery applicants, and being in the "bottom half" of your class is not necessarily a dealbreaker. There is something else in your application that is negative (failed classes, time gaps in training, weird personal statement, bad LORs, or possibly an error filling out the application).

Still, there are certain programs that wait for the Dean's letter/MSPE before sending out invites. I think it's worth looking at invite threads from the last couple years (linked by me on the first page of this thread) and seeing which programs are known for late invites.

What date was your application complete? I don't want to make you worry, but, a 230 on step 1 + big 10 school x 40 programs should result in more than 2 interviews at this point in the season. If your aplication was late then you can count on getting 5 or 6 more interviews. If not, it is very possible that you have a bad LOR.

When do you stop receiving interviews in surgery? Late october early november?

I think it's impossible to predict this season since the timeline is so different from other years. That said, going by this board, around 15/30 programs I applied to haven't even offered interviews yet. AND judging from the relative timeline of last year compared to other specialties (with Gen Surg historically offering interviews later)... my assessment is that the next two weeks are going to have a lot of action.

:xf: here's hoping, anyway...

204/200 from good med school (a top 25 school), likely strong LOR. Applied to 70 programs, 1 interview invite... 6 rejections. Haven't heard from the rest.

What's your take? Should I still have hope? Plan B?

Thanks!
With your step scores, I would strongly advise to get someone to start making phone calls for you in the next few weeks. Programs are going to want to hear from a reputable person that you are a stronger applicant than you test scores may imply.

I agree with what everyone is saying with applying to more programs. My advisers also said apply to no more than 20, but considering there were only 2 unfilled gen surg spots last year, I wasn't going to take the chance of not matching, so I ended up with 31.

My application was in 9/15. No Fails, no time between med school, personal statement was reviewed by staff. I have 4 LOR but I only saw 1 before it was uploaded. It would be a surprise to me if they said anything bad or non-enthusiastic. From my perspective, my application process does not smell right. Not really sure what to do though.

It will be interesting to see. It seemed like there was a big run about the second and third week and things have started to slow way down. Expected to see another bolus after mspe but it didn't really seem to accelerate anything. They are trickling in at a couple a week now..on my end anyway. Other people's experiences may be different. Am currently in the mid-teens as far as interviews. Average step 1, high step 2. Good letters, minimal research, not a name brand school.

One option would be to reach out to the program director at your home program, explain your situation, and see if he/she can shed some light on the situation. However, that may reduce your chances at your home program, and it won't really change anything, so I think I would focus on doing really well with the interviews you get.

If November 1st comes and goes, and your invites are still not rolling in, then it's time to start asking for preliminary positions.

Are you entirely sure that your application is complete? I don't just mean letters. Double check that all of your transcripts are in-fact up in ADTS. This includes UMLE transcripts med school transcripts which should be listed separately.

If everything is up in ADTS then you should start looking for a solid prelim spot just as a back-up plan. While doing this, it would be wise to consider that you won't get a good prelim spot in the Scramble, but, if you match into a preliminary spot you won't be able to scramble into the one of the 900 radiology spots that will be open. If you think you want to scramble into something else then don't take a prelim in the match. also, make sure you figure out which letter of recommendation was bad so that you don't resubmit it in the SOAP.
