I'm lucky to have been accepted at a great state medical school and want to get a headstart on some research/publications. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get published independently through things like literature reviews, letters to the editor, database analyses, etc.? Additionally, does anybody know how to be upfront as PIs if they support student publications when joining a lab?

Take the first half-year to get acclimated to your med school and the constant flow of new information
Then if you’re still eager to add research reach out after winter break
Congratulations on your admission

There are lots of freely available data for research purposes. But the difficulty is coming up with a hypothesis and knowing how to analyze it. It usually takes a team of people. So doing this on your own will be difficult. If you have a background in stats/python then it makes things easier.

Your best bet is to find a research mentor. And then do a lot of reading -- find things that haven't been published before.
