I took that quiz a few weeks ago but I recall that neurosurgery was # 1 and cardiothoracic surgery was # 3 or 4... The very last specialty on my list... pediatrics.

I was hoping neurosurgery would be higher, but this is pretty accurate for me.

brain surgery number 1??!! That is the last one I want to do. I am not thrilled about surgery but I could see how it would fit my personality. This quiz kinda confirmed that when 3 out of my top 5 were surgery specialties.

Actually, the majority of neurosurgery is spine surgery.

I'm guessing I'll eventually choose to avoid it just because it's such a small niche, even though I find it infinitely fascinating.

Neurosurgery was really far down my list too. All the surgery specialities were. I often feel like most people on SDN thing surgery is the coolest thing ever. But, honestly, I find it boring. Somebody has to find it boring and do other things though. :p

IM-Gastroenterology(79%)
Dermatology(75%)
Pediatrics(74%)
Urology(73%)

Interesting, I've honestly never even considered GI as a possibility.

I've been considering primary care of some kind, though I had always thought Pathology was interesting...
Never thought of myself as a Derm... But glad that surgery was further down the list.
Only this past year have I considered EM... so it's cool to see it somewhat high.

I've mostly been considering primary care so far, but the survey top 5 says:

Psych
Plastic Surgery
Endocrinology
Pulmonology
Neurosurg

At least endocrinology is on my radar as a possibility. Definitely not plastics. Now that I actually got into med school I really do need to start doing some more research on specialties.

In order:

1) School Bus Driver
2) Mail Man
3) "Fluffer"
4) IM- Infectious Diseases
5) IM- Gastro
6) Thoracic Surgery
7) Surgery- General
8) OB/GYN
9) Plastics
10) IM- Hemo
11) IM- Pulmonary Diseases
12) IM-Nephrology
13) Rad-Onc
14)Psych
15) Ortho

Is it a bad sign if my highest match is 60%?....

FWIW I got Gastro, Derm, EM, Ob/gyn... I'm interested in EM and ob/gyn, no idea really what gastro or derm actually do on a day to day basis so no idea if I'd be into them yet.

Heed these three words carefully - it doesn't matter.

This is just a personality quiz. Nothing is a good or bad sign. Work hard in med school for whatever specialty you want to go into, or shadow/research specialties you might have an interest in. The rest should take care of itself.

Fun quiz - I've always enjoyed these things, ever since I got my first issue of Cosmo as a 13-year-old ("What does your pantie color say about your personal love style?").

Highest percentage in psychiatry - not a surprise to me. Second highest in allergy/immunology. Quiz appears to have pegged me for specialties that involve a lot of long-term care and aren't procedure heavy, which is about right for me, I think.

3) "Fluffer"

93% personality match for Gen Surg. Idk if that is a good or a bad thing!

I think it's worth putting out the reminder that these are personality matches. They have nothing to do with what you're interested in. That being said, here are my matches:

Thoracic Surgery 84% Personality Match
Surgery - General 84% Personality Match
Internal Medicine - Pulmonary Disease 83% Personality Match
Plastic Surgery 81% Personality Match
Internal Medicine - Nephrology 80% Personality Match
Pathology 80% Personality Match
Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery 80% Personality Match
Ophthalmology 80% Personality Match
Neurological Surgery 80% Personality Match
Obstetrics and Gynecology 79% Personality Match

I got a 100% match with Psychiatry, right on point! Also 100% with Oncology, and can see why, just never thought about it...

haha very cool, enjoyed this quiz.

the specialty i so very want at this point in my pre-med life is emergency medicine. of course it can and may change, but it was nice to get some tiny bit of validation from this probably meaningless quiz :D

Thoracic Surgery 97%
OB/GYN 96% (??? would never haha)
General Surgery 94%
Plastic Surgery 93%
Emergency Medicine 92% (love)

Just curious........

why?

Why not? I've shadowed an ob/gyn extensively and it's pretty awesome. There's a lot of variety including surgeries and procedures, pretty good hours with the exception of the occasional birth, and a lot of what you deal with is happy, not sad.

Just curious........

why?

Catching babies, amniotic showers, removing fibroids, I couln't ask for anything more!

On a serious note, I want to help others who have had high-risk pregnancies. Also, after almost 10 years of nursing, seeing a baby born is still the coolest thing. I want to carry that kind of exicitement with me till the end of my days. :)

Just. Couldn't. Do. It.

On that note, I really hope I didn't just jinx myself. So many people end up doing something entirely different than what they thought they were going to pursue entering M1.

I had GI, CT-surg, gen-surg, neurosurg, ortho, ENT, then colorectal as my top 7. I'm just a little confused why GI is there with surgery...

It's also a little ironic that my top 7 starts with GI and ends with colorectal. :naughty:

Last time I got my top 3 as GI, EM, and Urology - which are my top 3. Though I'm leaning towards Urology if I want to do surgery and EM if I don't.

  1. Internal Medicine – Hematology: 85% Personality Match
  2. Internal Medicine – Nephrology: 84% Personality Match
  3. Internal Medicine - Infectious Diseases: 83% Personality Match
  4. Emergency Medicine: 81% Personality Match
  5. Preventative Medicine – Aerospace: 81% Personality Match

  8. Radiology – Diagnostic: 79% Personality Match
  9. Neurological Surgery: 79% Personality Match
  10. Preventative Medicine - Public Health and General: 78% Personality Match

I'm on board with a couple of these, but Aerospace preventative medicine? What is that, even?

Interesting quiz, probably won't be taking it again just because of how long and arbitrary some of the questions (and therefore my answers) were. Mostly just an amusement.

 looks like no surgery for me...

Preventative Medicine - Public Health and General 89% Personality Match ----- Welcome to Poorsville, population me. No.
Internal Medicine - Medical Oncology 87% Personality Match ----- Too depressing. I want a field that won't have me wanting to take a dose of .45 ACP at the end of a long shift.
Preventative Medicine - Occupational 87% Personality Match ----- Great, screening people for disability all day long and coming up with corporate wellness plans. Pass.
Obstetrics and Gynecology 86% Personality Match ----- They say if you do what you like for money, you start to resent it. I don't want to resent vaginas. Off the table.
Radiology - Diagnostic 84% Personality Match ----- Boring.
Psychiatry 84% Personality Match ----- NOPENOPENOPE

The spread for my results wasn't very high though, I had over 70% in every specialty but IM-Rheum, Urology, and IM. Perhaps it just doesn't work well for me because I've got very different career goals when compared to most aspiring docs.

I can't say I'm too surprised. I've kinda day dreamed about working in oncology or surgical oncology since I shadowed those areas for a class in high school. But picking a specialty is so far down the rosad, I'm interested to see how it will change in 4 years.

It actually looks pretty cool. I'm guessing most people in the field are employed by the DoD or NASA?
Not a lot of jobs for it in the civilian world, unfortunately, and there is only one civilian residency. I thought it sounded wicked cool myself, but the job options just aren't great. You'll probably either end up working for the military, unemployed, or screening commercial pilots for a living. If it was working for SpaceX or NASA, I'd sign the dotted line in a heartbeat, but those jobs are rare and from what I've heard they prefer ex-military.
