Hey everyone, just wanted to start a thread for the people applying to USUHS for the 2014 cohort. I am active duty Army and will be applying to the military track pretty shortly here. There is still a little over 2 and half months to get applications in, but that time will fly by I'm sure. I'm excited though I know the program is highly competitive in selection.

I am applying as well - for the civilian track.

Fallen625- What are your research interests? I don't know much about the civilian track. I've spent most of my adult life in the Army ranks.

I know there has to be others planning to apply to the military track this year that have stumbled across these forums.

Bueller?

KW58D - I am interested in eating disorders and obesity. What are yours?

Also, I had a few questions that maybe civilian applicants can answer as I haven't been able to find answers online yet.

1- What are the physical and security requirements? They are mentioned in the application addendum but I wasn't sure what that was.
2- I am confused by question 6 on the psychology addendum, which asks for military service preferences. I was under the impression that civilian applicants don't have any services commitments, but we are asked to answer this question?

As a civilian, you don't have to complete the addendum. You should probably email the school to double check.

I am interested mostly in suicide mechanisms and prevention. I'm also interested in PTSD.

As a civilain you can apply to take a military position, or you can apply to the strictly civilain track where you would not be required to join the military. As I understand it, the straight civilain route is more competitive getting up to 180 applicants per slot. Every year I talk to the admissions personnel I get very different numbers though. I think a lot of people apply due to their relatively high living stipend, intership palcement, etc.

Hey,

I'm applying as well and currently AD hoping to go the AF track in the USUHS program.

I'm starting to wrap everything up...so hopefully all will work out. The only thing that really concerns me is that I'm 8 years out of college and three years out of grad school, so it's been hard to contact old psychology professors to coordinate letters of recommendation.

MLM0918, I ended up getting an LOR from our Brigade psychologist, my senior rater, and from a college professor that I still kept in touch with. After speaking with USUHS reps in a teleconference, it seems that they expect this kind of thing from AD personnel.

Are you applying to the Army program? How many active duty members apply each year? Explaining this program to my command has been a challenge, but it looks like everything is straightened out. My wing commander is writing a letter for me, but they are hesitant because there's no "official" package for OTS like they are used to. I try to explain it's an academic program and per my functional I have already met the requirements to apply, but they had me create and application package for them. Hopefully all the extra will be worth it.

It sounds like your MOS is mental health related? I'm intel with a prior civilian life in social services but I want to go back that that line of work.

I am applying to the Army program. I'm actually a pilot that was prior enlisted as an intel analyst. I have a civilian background in ecological research and working in a psych ward. I also currently volunteer at the local Army hospital psychology research center. I've found that as AD you have to put in a lot of extra (unpaid) work to be competitive, at least with the SDN caliber of applicants.

USUHS varies (highly) in the number of AD applicants per year, from roughly 30-300, so you never know.

I plan on applying for the army track as well, Lord willing.

Paul, are there issues preventing you from applying? I am mailing my packet tomorrow. So the waiting game will officially start. I wanted to get it in early so they can go through everything and alert me to anything missing, though I have gone through the checklist numerous times. Two months to hear about an interview will seem like torture I'm sure. I'm not even in the CONUS, so setting up the interview has it's own challenges.

Hello all. I applied for the AF and navy for 2014. I am active AF and have been in for 11 years. My undergrad is in Addiction and substance abuse. I am interested in research with in the military for PTSD interrelated with on psychological problems. How did everyone do on there GRE?

Good luck to everyone! I am prior Marines (been a civilian for 9 years now), have a BS in Psychology and MS in Professional Counseling, applying for the NAVY program. I've been a little OC about perfecting my file; overnighting it today. I'm interested in Personality Disorders, Trauma, & Deployment Psychology. I spoke with the admissions department a couple of days ago and they said they will start going through files on January 13th and the committee will probably get the files around the first of February--they are a little short staffed in the admissions department right now and will be letting people know around the middle of January if there is anything missing in their files.

It's just a little confusing...I am veteran applying for the Navy. Therefore, I am currently a civilian, but I'm assuming I was supposed to fill out the addendum because of my prior service. I'm also assuming that the "Medical and Clinical brief bio" is only meant for those applying to the civilian track...not civilians applying for the military track.

From the Clinical Psych admissions page:
5. Supplemental Application Materials

Clinical and Medical Psychology Applicants: GRE waivers are not granted.
You must complete the Graduate Application Addendum for Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program in addition to the main application form. You can access this form at either of the following two links:
Medical and Clinical brief bio--Civilian Applicants only

Yes, only skip the addendum if you are NOT trying to commission into the military and remain a civilian. I'm guessing the faculty will have to review applications prior to FEB as they are sending out interview invites the last week of January for Army track personnel atleast.

I sent my packet in a few weeks ago, it was received, but they haven't processed it at all.

Well, now it really is a waiting game for everyone! Good luck! With AF OTS boards being suspended until FY15 (save one board for math/techie geeks), it will be interesting to see if these programs start to attract more active duty applicants. In any case, I wish everyone the best!

Just received this email today:

Applicants,
I have just been updated on the timeline for final applicant reviews and interview dates. They are as follows:
Monday January 27th: Final Review of military and civilian applications
Thursday February 13th (all day): Air Force/Navy interviews
Friday February 21st (time TBD): Army interviews
Monday February 24th Open House for Civilian Applicants: Details TBD
While the open house is customarily for civilian applicants, military students will also be there and, if you are able to stay, you would be welcome as well. Expect that notification for interview will happen within the week of 27-31 January. Typically, notification is sent by U.S. Mail; however, email follow-up is usually conducted as well.

I guess that if you're waiting on the mail, it could potentially go as far as entering the second week of February for notification. Hopefully an email will arrive well before that.

Wow, some of you have already received emails with important dates. Other than getting confirmation that my application is complete and is being forwarded to the program director for review, I haven't heard anything. I'm AD Air Force, so according to the dates above I should hopefully be hearing something shortly. I don't really understand the discrepancy between the dates above and the interview timeline provided for AF applicants. On the USUHS website it states that AF interviews will be in March.

Does anyone know the date for the civilian interviews? Thanks!

In corresponding with the Program Assistant (as the GEO hasn't picked up the phone or responded to my emails for package confirmation, USPS says yay, yet no response from school-- talk about anxiety-provoking, but at this point of year they have to be swamped!), KW58D's dates are on point and beginning the 28th, interview invites will be sent out. You'd imagine that email invites would follow shortly after a mailed invite to attempt to coordinate travel arrangements if necessary. Anyone else have any luck establishing contact with the GEO?

If the dates above are correct, does civilian applicant open house mean the same thing as civilian interviews? Or is the open house a separate event?

ahpsych- I am not sure how the civilian track interview scheduling is going. Honestly I don't have a warm and fuzzy witht he whole situation. I never received an email stating my packet was received and all components were accounted for. I called and was told the package was received. I mailed it a month in advance so I could fix any issues they found, but I couldn't get any answers really. I'm hoping for an email or call this coming week. If not, then I guess I will assume I am not invited for an interview. I've been setting up travel arrangements since they like to do everything last minute.

I find it interesting that you said you don't have a warm and fuzzy with the whole situation. I was thinking that when I read your post about the email you received from USUHS with the interview dates. Though I have received confirmation that my packet was received and is complete, I never received any emails like the one you talked about. I definitely felt out of the loop. While I did receive confirmation, it took me about 3 or 4 weeks to get an answer. The lady I talked to said she doesn't even work in that office and is only helping temporarily because they are so busy. She said she would email me to let me know the status, but she never did. I called and emailed a few times, but never got a response. I finally got a hold of her a few weeks later and got an answer. I mailed my package in at the beginning of November, which I thought was early enough just in case it was missing anything. It makes me wonder how many people applied to make them so swamped.

I finally got a USPS confirmation of my completed application this past Saturday (18 January), with the letter dated 14 January. Didn't receive the email KW58D did though and no responses to emails or phone calls either, much like tapars3513. KW58D - How many days of PTDY were you authorized? In AF, per AFI 36-3003, our unit commander can approve up to 10 days.

As a side: I think the GEO also supports the Master's and Doctoral and Medical programs within the Medical, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health, postgraduate Dental Colleges and Nursing schools, so they may not just be facilitating applications for clinical/medical psychology. Not sure if they do the medical applications, but I do know med applications at USUHS are a rolling admissions deal with many, many applicants since it typically has a higher acceptance rate than other medical schools. Furlough may have had an issue as well back in October.

In civilian school applications, often (but not always) you send you application to the appropriate graduate office of a specific school (say College of Arts and Sciences, School of Medicine or School of Education), which forwards to the appropriate department (Clinical Psychology vs. Social Psychology vs. Counseling Psychology). Since USUHS is kind of one big school, I think you have to consider medical, dental, nursing, etc. applicants as their realm of processing. I have a friend who did a Master's in Tropical Medicine there with the Army, she mentioned to me they are somewhat slow in responsiveness, and she graduated about three years ago now.

It appears also as if they break things up by brach as well (interviews, application requirements and deadlines). So KW58D applied Army and maybe only Army applicants got the email he did. Seems illogical, but what is really logical in the military?

I will say the Program Administrative Specialist has been very responsive and timely with her responses. She calms my nerves. :)

I was unaware that is how the school processes all of the applications that they receive. That makes sense as to why they are so busy. Thanks for referencing the AF AFI. I was curious if we were allowed any PTDY days if we were to get an interview. I'm relieved to hear that I'm not the only AD AF applicant who did not receive an email. I think that this waiting game is getting the best of me and making me over-analyze things.

I was not "authorized" any PTDY days. I had to beg and plead to get my unit to fund the travel for an interview. I was able to get 5 days including travel time. Mind you I am flying from Hawaii, so it's a long flight and 4 hour change in time. I would fly back the day after the interview.

Thanks for your response! I called the GEO about a week before Christmas to confirm that my transcripts and such had made it, and they responded in a timely manner. I got a confirmation from USPS that the rest of the application got there, and I sent it about a month before the deadline, so I'm hoping it made it and all is well. It definitely explains things if all branches are done separately and then civilian is done separately yet again. I guess it is just a waiting game for all of us! I hope you get good news and that the travel situation works out for you too!

r you

If I am preparing to leave active duty
In the fall of this year, would I be eligible to sign up for the military track for next year's program? I wanted to sign up for this year's program, but I didn't finish my BA in time :(

For your sake and planning, I hope you find out in a timely manner KW!

Th APA Convention is in DC this year (Aug 5-8th or something like that). Would be fun to be around for that just before the academic year kicks off. In 2008 I got to volunteer and it was a fabulous experience. Hopefully timing would allow attendance.

RedheadAblaze - I would make contact with the service POC and get confirmation on guidance. They are listed on the USUHS website. For AF, I needed to get a quality of force letter from my command, an AF Form 422, submit PT scores and an email from my functional saying release from my career. It was only then that I could submit. However, per the USUHS website: "Applicants to the military-track Ph.D. programs in Clinical Psychology or Medical Psychology do not need to be on active duty at the time of their application. It is common for reserve, guard, enlisted, and civilian students to apply to the military-track Ph.D. programs and then commission as an officer before coming to USUHS." I know your situation is different because you are currently AD looking to be separated at the time of the next application, so I'd clarify with the POC to see which route is best for you.

Depending on what branch, it may offer some benefit if you stay in or affiliate with Guard or Reserves. For example, the Air Force applicants lists that all AD will be considered first, followed by all others considered. Not sure how much truth there is to this, but there might be some edge to apply as AD. If you apply as a civilian, I would use that time from separation to application to focus on all the things you couldn't do while AD to make yourself a very competitive candidate, especially with many, many qualified candidates per available slot.

Best of luck to you.

And now....on the the LONGEST WEEK EVER! ;)

RedheadAblaze- As MLM0918 said, you don't need to be active duty, or even guard/reserve when applying. Depending on your goals it might open more options to get out and apply since you can then apply for all branches. I will be in that same situation next year since I will ETS in August 2015. For me, I will apply to roughly 15 schools next year and shoot for HPSP, though I found out that they have drastically cut the HPSP numbers. The Army only has 6 slots this year! So if no HPSP, it will be the hopes that I could get a MIL internship.

I guess there's always truck driving school lol

I can't wait to find out something this week. I'm very hopeful of getting an interview, but also realistic that they receive MANY qualified applicants.

It would be such a shame to go to truck driving school after all that work! I wish you the best (unless it means you get the slot and I don't! j/k ;) )

Hello All,

Does anyone have a good admissions contact number?

Yes the GEO number is (301) 295-9474. I called to confirm that all of my application pieces were there and got an answer.

I'm guessing nobody received an email about interviews today. Being that final decisions were supposed to be yesterday I thought word might come out today. Luckily nobody is anxious to find anything out or needs to finalize travel arrangements from outside of the contiguous U.S.

Ha ha, KW58D. My professional webmail is down for the count, which is of course the email address I used. Talk about added anxiety! Final decisions yesterday, give a day for the GEO to prepare and send out letters, and then follow up with an email because "usually" that's conducted as well?? I predict Friday or Saturday. The last time the GEO sent me something, it took four days from DC to Texas where I am currently located. Of course with the Icepocalypse here, who knows what may happen.

Thank You! I found a contact number shortly after I posted. I called to make sure all my documents were in and complete as well. THE WAITING GAME :bang::boom:

My advisor (Dr. Grunberg) told me that he spent most of Friday or Saturday (don't remember which) reviewing apps, that would be pretty quick to have a decision already. I don't know about the military but the interview weekend for Civilians who are chosen February 23rd-24th. Last year I think I found out three weeks before hand.

Ok, just got off the phone with one of the clinical psychology program administrators and was told:

"The faculty are still reviewing applications. Interview invites will go out in the next week or two to give the interviewees plenty of time to make travel arrangements. Interview invites will come from the GEO, not from the program administration."

Thank you for the update KW58D. I am also trying to get PTDY & Travel Pay to attend the interview date given. I am AD Army as well. Is the projected date for military interviews still the 21st of February? I would like to visit usuhs a few days before or after to get a better feel of the campus/campus life.

I'm wondering if the reason for still reviewing the applications is the # of applicants applying or the inclement weather.

The reason for the delay is the poor weather and short staffing. The interview days will not change because it is too much of a hassle to do. Final days for decisions from faculty is tomorrow by close of business. Invites go in the mail the following week, hopefully with an email as well.

Just thought I would mention that someone in the interview invite thread got a Civilian invite. Hopefully some of us will be getting invites soon... although I am not sure if USUHS does their interview by POI or in mass form?

Looks like civilian invites are out. Congrats to those with an interview invite! Any word for military track? KW, were your conversations with the program office military specific?

Well, I just got off the phone with the GEO, and they say that no invites have been extended......., so from this point I can't really give any veritable information.

My conversations were with the Army rep, who said the program admins would send out invites, then I was told by the program admins that the GEO was sending out invites. Now I'm just confused.

I know it might not be the same for military invites, but FWIW, civilian invites did comes from the GEO.
