Local med school on probation
By Jeremy Mullman
June 15, 2004
The Chicago Medical School said Tuesday that it is on probation with the body that accredits U.S. medical schools.
The school, which has 750 students, is one of four medical science programs at North Chicago-based Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Last September, it was inspected by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the accrediting body of the Assn. of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Assn.
After the site visit, the committee raised several concerns about the school, including its dependence on student tuition and the stability of its faculty leadership.
According to a Chicago Medical School spokeswoman, the school on Monday received official notice that it has two years to fix the problems. If the school is unable to do so, it could lose its accreditation, meaning its graduates would be unable to take medical boards or enroll in residency programs.
The spokeswoman says the school had been making some changes, even before inspectors came to campus. ?Basically, we got a slap on the wrist,? says the spokeswoman, who predicted the school would be back in good graces within a year. ?We?re still accredited.?
Attempts to reach a spokesman for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education were unsuccessful.
Until March, Rosalind Franklin University had been called Finch University School of Medicine.
