You guys had someone match at Brown too.

A good example of how a strong department can help in the match. All of these programs are pretty darn competitive.
Mmm seeing all those matches at UW gets me excited about all the hot young interns coming in this summer and not to mention all the sub-I's that will be rotating through the ED looking for a good letter of rec! No better way than to go out for a beer with the faculty after a long shift, then possibly back to my pad if you catch my driftWisconsin:

Didn't realize OHSU was so medicine and primary care heavy.
If you are not interested in academic medicine... does it really matter whether you do family medicine at Harvard or a no name hospital? i.e. should getting into residency at "top" institutions really be a concern for those not going into academic medicine?

So many comments on the internet follow this scheme in response to someone else:
Take original claim or question to extreme to construct straw-man. Counter-claim that it is not true. Concede caveats exist. Appeal for middle-ground. Restate original claim in different words.
...
Nobody is saying that going to Harvard is necessary to become a successful academic, or even world-renowned. Nobody is saying that nobody from Southern Illinois University ever became a successful academician.
We all agree, however, that going to Harvard would give you every advantage on your path towards a successful academic career.

That is such a convoluted and turgid schema that I find it difficult to imagine that it is either popularly implemented or easily followed.
But this is a digression.
The controversy over match lists will rage on as long as people keep claiming the other side is too extreme.
That's terrible. That bacon is severely overcooked.
I thought the exact same thing! That's terrible. That bacon is severely overcooked.
And now, a few notes on Maryland's match list 2012:
The Good
Of note, we had 3/3 match into Plastics, 2/2 match into Derm, 5/5 match into ENT, 2/2 match into Ortho, and 3/3 match into Ophtho.
-Very little interest this year in Anesthesiology and Ortho
-Zero interest in Neurosurgery
There was a huge interest in staying at Maryland for Medicine this year (16/31)
For some reason Child Neurology was big this year too
The Bad
We "only" matched 5/7 in Urology. One of the two unmatched ended up doing surg prelim at UVA, the other is taking a year off
The Ugly
Only 1/4 people matched into RadOnc this year
Out of curiosity, is it possible to see match rates before and after scramble?
Is it correct to assume that a few students from the majority of classes have to scramble?
Yes, it is correct to assume a few students in all of the above lists scrambled for a categorical spot, or at the very least a prelim.
No, it is not possible to see the match rates pre-scramble. Schools don't even release that to their own students, much less publicly. Think about it, if you had to scramble would you want everyone to know about it?
Midtier at best....only a few academic powerhouses all around. The rads list is especially very ****ty, especially coming from wiscWisconsin:

spin it any way you want but i know the truth. Pathetic.I realize youre trying to be sarcastic. That'd be pretty funny if it were actually true as generally UW usually has about 40-50% stay in state, with most of the rest of the grads in the midwest (although many go to top Midwestern academic programs like Mich, Wash U, NW, Mayo, etc).
This year was sort of the opposite; we only had 32% stay in WI with the remainder distributed with still a good number in Midwestern academic programs but many others at top academic programs on the coasts. While there are many UW grads at all the top coastal academic programs, traditionally most of our grads want to stay in the midwest since 90% of our class is from WI. This year, not so
much; we'll see if this becomes a trend. Our rads match was obviously great this year; every single person was at a top 20 program, which was only true of HMS, Penn (except Monti), Wash U (except UIC) and JHU this year.

It was a down year for UW Madison. Many went into areas of need anyways.
