Hey guys,

Are you sure that Loyola's class is full now? I called them last week and they said I was still under review. Is that code for "too late buddy!"

i know they are still interviewing so dont worry

hmmm . . . to rescue the thread.

when I was reading the brochures, it seemed like a number of the students were really into pursuing careers service in 3rd world countries/inner cities. and like 50% of the class goes on the summer trip. is seems a much greater percentage than other schools do charity healthcare.

is this a main reason some of you decided to apply/choose loyola?
yes

My interviewer, who was awesome, raved about the summer trips. What a cool place, I know I'm going to be happy there. All I have to say is: Ad Majorum Dei Gloriam.

Ad Majorum Dei Gloriam...........what does that mean???? please educate us

It's the motto of the Jesuits, the order founded by Ignatius Loyola.

Hi everyone, this is my first post ever... but this thread has been really helpful and I was hoping to get some advice. I'm from Michigan and am on the top tier of the waitlist at UMich. However, I'm in at Loyola already, and LOVE it, as does everyone else apparently. I am worried about the stress and sometimes negative atmosphere at UMich, and I know I would be so happy at Loyola. If I get in off the waitlist, I know I'm going to be facing a tough decision (umich is a great school too obviously and much cheaper)... so go with my heart or my head ???

I have the same sort of heart wrenching decision...loyola is my ideal school, loved everything about it. what to do, what to do...anyone think Loyola would hinder you in the match? this is my only concern...i know not being happy will hinder me, and I dont know how happy i will be elsewhere.

The most important question-- ask yourself "What school will help mold me into the type of doctor I want to be?"

Where will you be happy for the next fours years? If you are not happy, chances are you will not thrive in med school. If you don't thrive, you probably wont do well. Then how well will you match? Plus, the match is more a function of YOU and your performance as an individual than it is of the school. Loyola's 2003 Match is proof positive of what their students are capable of....

Hi everyone, Loyola just emailed me my financial aid packet. 48 grand in loans for the first year! Yippee! Anyone considering buying an apartment to try and break even/save money? Could someone post this year's match list?

:scared: OM freaking G! 48 grand??? So, does that change your mind at all?

Well I am assuming Rush will be about the same (as are most other private schools). So that only leave UIC-Peoria to save money. I definitely prefer Loyola........

Anyone attending Loyola and living in Chicago?

Thanks! 🙂 😍 🙂

Hey everyone,
So I logged on to the financial aid web site and saw that there was an "award letter", which is a very misleading title. There was no award, just a lot of loans and it kind of freaked me out. I mean, I wasn't expecting a miracle, but over $50,000 with living expenses is crazy!! I can't even imagine ever being able to pay that back. I am seriously considering the National Health Services Corporation program to pay for this. Is anyone else thinking about this? Or does anyone have any inspirational words to comfort this crazy amount of debt? Help!

$50k+ per year. I know, it's crazy.

Hey there Loyola threaders. May 15 is quickly approaching and I had some Qs on my mind. I loved Loyola when I visited (the community feel, the clinical education, the facilities and the gym (of course), the city, and the focus on ethics and religion in health care?you know?I liked just about everything). However, I do have some concerns that going to Loyola would be limiting because it is not as strong in research, it seems somewhat isolated from the Chicago area health system, and its name may not hold as much weight as other schools when it comes to match day. Any thoughts? Has anyone else investigated similar concerns? I am currently deciding between Loyola, GW, and SLU.

To be honest, I loved Loyola and aside from ranking statistics, it would be my #1, but you need to go to the best school you get into. If you can go yo GW then do it. If you are going to be in similar debt, you might as well go somewhere ranked. If someone can give a reason to go to Loyola over a ranked school I would love to hear it. You obviously need to go where you will be happiest , but when you are talking a 200K investment, you need to get the most bang for your buck...this may be me playing devils adv. so I more than welcome some constructive arguments...I think there will be a lot of us in this same sort of situation. We love Loyola; it is all we want in a med school, but is that enough to outweight the "percieved" benefits of a ranked institution?...

?Perceived benefits?? I like that.

A school like GW definitely has a stronger name, but is a ranked school clearly a ?better? school? The rankings seem somewhat arbitrary, but higher rankings do lead to more research money, top notch faculty, and possibly more opportunities for graduates later on.

I?ve been talking to doctors and residency directors about this topic, and many say that it is better to be in the ?top quartile of any school than in the bottom quartile of a more ?prestigious? school.? From speaking with many of them, I got the feeling that it is most important to find a school that is a good fit and to be in an environment where one has the best chance of ?doing well.? So I think that Loyola is a better choice over a ranked school if it is a better fit. Of course, on the other hand, many doctors I talked to said the opposite and that many residency programs do favor students at more prestigious schools. So, it could go either way.

GW was ranked #64 last year (is it ranked this year?), and Loyola is not ranked. Does that make GW stronger? In general, is it clear that students at ranked schools have a leg up on match day, or is that just a myth?

i'm on the waitlist, but should i be able to see my award letter on the financial aid website? i applied for it a few weeks ago i think, maybe its just not up yet..........

Loyola isn't ranked because they do not hand in their forms and choose not to be ranked, not because they are too low to be ranked in the first place. In the Chicago area hospitals Loyola students are highly regarded for their great clinical skills, and are well respected in general. As far as research, there are plenty of opportunities for post M1's in their summer to do research. AsherAysh, what do you mean by being "isolated" in the Chicago area health system? Loyola students go all over Chicago for their rotations, and have plenty of opportunities for away rotations their 4th year.

Hey guys,

I am also thinking very hard about Loyola and the May 15th date. I really loved loyola, and have worked there doing research (yes, it does exist!) and had a great time. I am accepted to Stony Brook and Tufts, and was wondering (as a NY state resident) what you guys think i should do. BTW I got my financial "award" of 51k a year in loans from Loyola- not too incouraging.

I'd also like to hear what schools any one else is turning down to go to Loyola and why?

Thanks for your help.

does anyone know if loyola lets us know where we are on the ranked waitlist before may 15? i know rush lets you know what quartile you're in, and where you are is sometimes predicative of your odds of getting accepted... :scared:

i have the same question, does anybody know?

Your comments are definitely encouraging and appreciated. A few Stritch graduates told me that Loyola felt ?somewhat isolated? in that Loyola students may have limited access to other educational resources in the Chicago area health system. I was just trying to gauge if there is any validity to that claim. Recently, I?ve heard a number of positive things on that topic and I?ve gotten the impression that it is much less of an issue than I was primarily let on to believe. Any thoughts?

As far as the "award letters" go I wasn't too upset with Loyola. I wasn't really expecting to get any money anywhere so I was at least glab I maxed out on the subsidized loans...

As far as the whole prestige thing goes, who can tell? Of course Loyola is going to tell you it's the bomb but obviously it's not going to look like Pritzker on a residency application. I posted their 2003 matchlist, although it is a dead link now and it looked fine to me. I seem to recall some Mayos and MGHs etc.

I'm going to Loyola because I loved it there. I would guess that any of you who interviewed there would have realized there was something different going on at that school. I would much rather be happy for 4 years and get a great residency than be miserable and get the best one. Stop letting US News give you 2nd guesses.

Good call, matt. Loyola definitely had the "vibe" for me. How has the apartment search been going for everyone? I'm from ST. Louis and went up there last weekend and had kind of a shock. High prices, low quality compared to what I'm used to. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find something before July.

I just got a letter from Loyola yesterday wanting to know if I still wished to remain on the waitlist. It says something along the lines of they expect to go pretty deep into the alternate list and want to gauge who is really interested...

this has to be ten characters-bump

Well I thought I would throw my hat into the ring here since it seems alot of us are in similar situations. I'm trying to decide between Loyola and UIC-Chicago, and have been tearing my hair out in the process. Anyone else making this same decision? The schools are literally 15 minutes away from each other, so thats a wash. But everything else the two schools are on different planets. Most significantly, Loyola will be about 70 thousand pricier with scholarships from UIC. But as for the schools themselves, Loyola has ultranice posh facilities versus UIC's antiquated, dreary ones. A really supportive, conducive learning environment versus a do-it yourself one. A helpful, competent administration versus an aloof frustrating one. A mostly white, catholic studentbody versus an instate diverse one. An isolated campus versus an urban one integrated with lots of other schools. Lots of study space versus little. Religious versus secular. Private versus state. A quality local reputation versus a quality national one. I could go on and on ad naseum, but you probably get the point. Actually, what was my point? what's going on here? where am I?

Ok, to be more relevant, would we all be happier for 4 years at Loyola? No doubt about it. Is it worth 200k of debt, and the anguish that it will cause later on, especially for those of us who could end up in primary care? Tough to say, I have my doubts. Will Loyola's predominatly regional reputation hurt someone's chances in a national match? possible, i don't know that one either. Here's one I can handle--did this post benefit anyone in the SDN community? Most certainly not.

I understand your frustration dude, but do you think that UIC has a strong national reputation?
We keep hearing all this stuff about how Loyola is a local school, but their 2003 matchlist was very good. I linked it on this thread but the link died. All the big East Coast hospitals were on there, so was Mayo. I'm not so sure I buy this stuff about how Loyola is going to hurt us on Match day. Besides, the gym kicks arse.

I don't think there is really enough of a distinction in terms of reputation for you to make that a factor. Loyola and UIC are both respectable schools. The cost and your hapiness are really the important things to consider. It's a tough decision. Good luck.

To those who are definitely headed to Loyola next year, how is the housing search going? I'm going to start looking in a few weeks.

i've been accepted to CCOM in downers grove, but anxiously awaiting the call from loyola after may 15 🙂 so my fiance and i were looking for apartments kinda close to both, and we found a three bedroom top-floor-of-a-house for $600/month!!! and its in mccook, which is just a few miles south of loyola. now if i could only get taken off the waitlist.... 🙄

I have made up my mind to go to Loyola. I am extremely happy even though it was the most expensive school I got into lol! What is the apartment issue for everyone? Is the gazette on the Loyola website updated and accurate? I think I am going to go for a single studio for hopefully less than $600/month and within 5min (Forest Park).

Now I have to pass the time until late July! I love everything about Loyola-one class at a time, low lecture time, beautiful facilities, open to religion, etc. I look forward to meeting everyone. Anyone moving up early?

So, has anyone gotten off Loyola's waitlist yet? When do you think they will start calling?

The due date for sending in our "intention to enroll" forms is May 17th. I'd expect that there will be quite a bit of movement after the 17th.

Keep us posted if you get off the list!!!!

what kind of info? i'm applying with the 2005 cycle, but if i get accepted to loyola, i'd be interested to know what info you have 😉

Is Loyola really one class at a time? looking at the calendar for class it looks like more than that? anyone?

As I understand it you START with just one class (MCBG) and then after fall break it picks up.

gotcha thanks...I remember them saying that MCBG kept getting tougher bc there is constantly new info and a fixedb amount of class time...they were talking about modifying last yr...at least, that is what my tour guide said. Anyone remeber if they grade on a curve? or is it class dependant? I would be nice if they made at least anatomy P/F

They have an Honors/High Pass/Pass/Remediated Pass/Fail grading system. Some classes are strictly Pass/Fail, but I'm not sure which ones.

Here are the links to policy info about grades:

How's everyone doing on the apartment search? I'm going back up there June 5-6 to look at some more places.

Thanks for the info you guys have been posting! I can't wait to start!

Has anyone heard from the Alternate List as yet? Any acceptances from the wait list?

I'm just starting to look for a place. Even though I live in Chicago, I am clueless about housing in the burbs. Also, I'm still trying to decide if I want to live by myself or with a roomate. How's it going for the rest of you? Which neighborhoods are you guys looking at?

Happy apartment hunting!
Laurie

I called today(5/24), still no movement from the alternate list...they said maybe by the end of the week!!! Let's keep our fingers crossed !!! Good luck everyone 🙂
