there were so many pages so i couldn't read through them all...but are long-sleeved button down shirts the norm? what if it's really hot? (southern california)

After reading this, I feel like the black leather Kate Spade purse will be just fine. The question is, is it bad to carry a black bag w a navy suit?
Light pastel colors are complementing:
These colors look more lively:
If not, go with the navy:
Black colors seem redundant.
I'd AVOID monograms like the plague.
Most importantly, I'd stay in budget though.👍👍👍

Whine when you're interviewing in TX, please.:d

^^^Oops! Those were recommendations for grey/gray colored suits.😳
DISCLAIMER: My personal opinion.🙂

I'm pale and blonde, so am hoping to find something appropriate that trends more towards brown rather than black or dark grey. Thoughts on this suit's appropriateness?

I also have a pair of these purple prism Danskos that I love, too much shine/personality for wearing to an interview? I think the purple is fairly mute in person, and I really cannot wear heels.

I just bought that suit this weekend. I'm also pale and blonde. It looks pretty grey in person, I think it'll be fine. Any other thoughts?

Also, what is the verdict on shells vs. long sleeve collared shirts? Are collared shirts required?

From searching this thread, both shells and collared shirts are acceptable. With sleeveless shells, you shouldn't take off the blazer, so keep that in mind if you're eyeing those.

My questions:

What's the verdict on black pantyhose? Are both the opaque and sheer versions considered too casual?
Any shopping tips for petites? I'm not applying this cycle, but I'm 4'11" with a shoe size of 4 and I figured starting early would help me find things that at least marginally fit off the rack.

Suit's good --
You were kidding on the shoes, right? Right?...

Jcrew petite section has some amazing options. I had to order online but everything I bought fit extremely well!

I LOVE that suit! Super cute!

Also, I picked up some shells for underneath my suit this weekend at Banana Republic and Loft. BR had 40% off clearance, and Loft also had 40% off coupon if anyone is looking for sales!

I also need petite sizes. I was shopping this weekend and found some great shirts at Brooks Brothers. They won't wrinkle no matter what you do to them 👍👍

Also bought this briefcase, what do you guys think?

http://www.jackgeorges.com/lexington-collection-josephine-2034.html

and the most comfortable pumps in the universe.

If you want a suit set, my advice is to get a blazer that fits at the shoulders. The length and fit around the waist/arms are easier to alter. If you're not so dead set on pants, skirts/dresses are the way to go, as they are easier to alter.

I'm shorter than you, and I was able to find a blazer at Express that fit at the shoulders (00). I got it altered and it's perfect. I changed the buttons though, because they look kind of cheap.

So this dress, but in charcoal...

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/...TYPE=Dresses&sp=2&spc=117&ruleId=25&slotId=68

Appropriate or too sexy? I'm kinda curvy so it's form fitting. Also, I'm not sure about showing shoulders if I take the jacket off on the tour if its hot out?

Also, my other option is navy... Can I wear nude heels with navy? Can I do black?

One more question... What size bag would be considered TOO big?

For example...

I'm 5' exactly and I bought my suit from the petite section of J Crew. It fit me perfectly - sleeves weren't too long and the skirt hit at just the right length! I also like Banana Republic's petite section and Express.

I can't see wearing heels all day either. I don't quite recommend the shiny purple, but wear what makes you comfortable.

That bag looks great! I think in the case of interviews (at least in my opinion), bigger is better--you can fit more things in your bag (flats to change into, papers you'll get from the med school, your portfolio, etc.). And then your bag can also function as a great carry-on for flights, too!

See what I posted earlier in this thread:

Last week I ordered this tote: http://www.ebags.com/product/kennet...age/a-majority-tote/258593?productid=10257088 in black and I absolutely LOVE it. Even if you don't use it to carry an ipad and/or laptop (tho it has pockets for both), it is stylish and really functional (zillions of pockets big and small--such as the ones in front and back big enough for magazines, papers and boarding passes--plus lots of space for things in the middle compartment, metal feet so it stands up straight without a person leaning it against something, etc.).

I just flew back home yesterday from a med school interview and this tote was perfect for both the interview and my flights. From what I saw, all the other women at the interview were using similar looking/sized totes (though some had them in brown/nude or other colors).

I would highly recommend a tote of some kind, as you can fit your portfolio (which has a notepad useful for taking notes + space for reading materials) and plenty of other things in it (if I had brought flats to change into, they would have fit in there too).

/my 2 cents

Everything looks great, plumazul! 👍

its ok to have a pattern for the top? do all girls wear panty hose ( or stockings) whatever you call it.

Totally fine. I think as long as the material, color, and height are professional, you are good.

Would it be too ostentatious to carry my LV Speedy 30 on interview days?

It's not a monogrammed one, if that makes a difference...

Of your interviewers, many won't notice your bag at all.
Others will notice in a simple "That bag looks familiar" way but won't connect to any price tag or value judgements. Maybe a 'one of the fashion herd' judgement?
Of the ones who do recognize the bag and know the price tag, many will assume that if you're in college now, the bag's fake; some that you're a spoiled rich girl; others that you don't allocate finite resources (spend money) wisely.

That makes the bag a bit of a risky statement. But more importantly, it's not especially functional for an interview. Can you fit in a writing pad? An tablet computer? Brochures and forms you will be given there?

This is great advice, thanks! I am leaning towards skirts/dresses...there's so many fit issues with pants :scared:

Thanks for the replies! I'll give these places a shot 🙂

I have the larger Speedy, and it will hold my iPad with a few other things. Style-wise, it is probably my most interview-appropriate bag, as every other one I own is either too small, is a cross body without a shoulder strap, has too much hardware, or is in a color that is too much fun.

I do have a Coach bag like this one but without the ugly C's.

Would this one be appropriate?

Has anyone had experience with using a suit bag instead of a suitcase for travel? My suitcase is clunky and doesn't have a great suit compartment. I was wondering if I should just invest in a decent suit bag/case (after already spending so much money for applications 🙁) that I could stuff/hang all my clothes and bathroom items, and then bring my large tote purse.

For my purse, I have the Dooney & Bourke Florentine double strap tassel satchel in black. I got it as a gift for Christmas last year; is this okay or a bit too flashy?

I think those suit bags are of the two variety: clunky or will cause your suit to wrinkle anyways. I would just have a regular carry on and hang my suit up in the bathroom when I take a hot shower.

I think your bag is fine. It doesn't look flashy.

I put my pantsuit (folded nicely) in my carry-on luggage and it didn't come out wrinkled or anything. *shrugs* And I was basically in the airport all day (from 10am til 6pm between security and my connecting flight), so my suit was in my suitcase awhile before I could take it out and hang it up at the hotel.

I just got a typical black pantsuit (Calvin Klein, $60 suit pants, $80 suit top, $20 colored blouse). Maybe mine is super wrinkle-resistant? 😕

Do you have a pic/link to a pic of the bag?

Saw an interviewee wearing a white blazer today. Looked a little too "white-coat-ish" IMHO.

I haven't finished reading this thread yet,
so I apologize if this has already been answered, any suggestions for size 14 lady with large arms? My arms are too big for a suit jacket and I have looked at plus sized suits and they are all unflattering. I am also very large chested. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

I too am a size 14 lady with fat arms, and I just found a Calvin Klein suit jacket at Macy's that fit really well. http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/calvin-klein-plus-size-jacket-notched-collar-welt-pocket?ID=644960&CategoryID=40424&LinkType=&swatchColor=Black#fn=BRAND%3DCalvin%20Klein%26COLOR%3DBlack%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D34%26ruleId%3D65%26slotId%3D21
You have to go through a lot of duds, but there definitely are some great looking pieces out there. Also, have you looked at tailoring?

Is it necessary to wear a belt if your pants have belt loops? And are black, close-toe wedges okay? I can't walk well in heels!

Honestly, if you don't unbutton your jacket during your interview, no one would know about belt or no belt.

As for shoes, I wore some closed-toe black Clarks from their bendable collection that were super comfy with my pants suit. I highly doubt anyone cared what was on my feet although I still think they looked very business-like anyway. Also, I think I was able to walk more easily and less cautiously than the women wearing pumps, which was a huge plus with all the stairs we walked up and down.

A few nit-picky questions for all y'all 😀

- Jackets without buttons, yea or nay?
- Hair half-up acceptable or too childish?
- Laptop bag or portfolio instead of tote? (the one I have is in this vein of bags: http://www.caselogic.com/en-us/us/p...cks/156-laptop-backpack-_-mlbp_-_115_-_black#)

I think most jackets without buttons either look too casual or too evening attire.

I think hair half-up is fine, especially if you have a tendency to neurotically touch your hair.

I personally wouldn't wear a backpack of sorts on interview day, but I seriously don't think anyone would fault you for wearing one.

I agree with Jumpstartmy5HT in that jackets without buttons usually look too casual. Plus, then you can't keep your jacket closed over your blouse--which is the general look of female interviewees throughout the interview day (of what I've seen so far, anyway).

Hair half-up is perfectly fine! I think most of the women (including myself) at a recent interview were wearing their hair half-up. My undergrad drilled into us that women need to have their hair back in some form for professional interviews, and my face is too wide for me to sport a ponytail at interviews, so I went for a half-up look.

Most women will opt for a tote, but I think a laptop bag or portfolio alone is fine too. Not sure about a backpack, though. 😕

does it look okay to curl your hair? or does it not look professional?

Hmmm, that's a good question. That might be a bit over the top in my opinion, but I'm a no-frills kind of person when it comes to hair, so...(also, you don't want to be remembered for your hair and not your answers to the interview questions--but whether that happens also depends on how conservative/strict your interviewers are about looks).

I will say this: make sure you're not tempted to play with your hair because of the style (most women put their hair up or half-up to keep it from being distracting at interviews). I went with half-up and I never had the temptation to put my fingers through my hair.

thx for your response. I might just curl it and put it half up. my hair is really long, if i leave it down, it will look messy but if i leave it up my head will look really small. I have a small head. lol.

No problem! Lol, I have the opposite problem with a similar solution--I have a big head/wide face (and thin hair), so I can't put my hair completely up because then my head and face look extra big/wide. I also have moderately long hair, so half-up works perfectly for me. 🙂
