I know some people who really deliberated between gen surg and OB/GYN. And if you do a fellowship in gyn onc, it is a VERY operative specialty.Ob/Gyn is on the way up again according to the NRMP. I think everyone is behind the curve a few years in describing it as a "whipping boy" (or girl, as the case may be) specialty.
Yeah, the hours can suck and yeah, you can get sued. Still, the pay is decent, you get to operate, and you get to bring babies into the world. I have a ton of friends planning to apply for Ob/Gyn.
God bless Texas.I know for sure that the state of Texas has offered some incentives to help keep OB popularity up.
My sister (who is practices OB/GYN) said that unlike in many states, the malprac insurance rates for them are actually decreasing

The suing thing is unfortunately frequent and consistent. You should never kid yourself about being an OB-GYN...it is only a matter of time. But if you love it, I say go for it. My roommate was an OB-GYN and she dumped it for a different specialty. Interestingly enough, one of her major reasons was lack of consensus on anything. It is fairly hard to do randomized, blinded studies on a bunch of pregnant ladies. (As you might imagine. ) Therefore, much of their "evidence" is anecdotal. But it is a multi-faceted speciality...there's more to it than just pregnant women.
These are things you'll pick up my little grasshoppers. But you have plenty of time.
Yes but this is also true of other specialties (EM comes readily to mind, so does NS) that pre-meds/med students tend to hold up as perfect in every way; or if not perfect, than at least not deserving of a "whatever you do, don't go into X" like Ob/Gyn gets.
Docs get sued.
Kiddo,
I stopped reading after "Kiddo." I'm sure it was a very interesting post.
Even better, the oncology emergencies are few and far between, but there's plenty of other surgical emergencies to bring you in at 3 AM.I know some people who really deliberated between gen surg and OB/GYN. And if you do a fellowship in gyn onc, it is a VERY operative specialty.
Indeed. However a surg onc fellowship will allow you to forgo the ob/gyn residency, which wouldn't be my cup of tea, giving you the best of both worlds, IMHO--lots of time in the OR, minus the pages at 3 AM.Even better, the oncology emergencies are few and far between, but there's plenty of other surgical emergencies to bring you in at 3 AM.
Anyone have UCSD's Match List? Thanks!
HereAnyone have links to past match list threads? I'm specfically looking for past matches for Pitt and Brown - thanks!
Whats anyones take on when a school has a large amount of students matching into medicine-prelim.... Is this considered a postive outlook because they are matching into competitive programs that require a prelim medicine year OR negative in that the students could not match directly into a program and needed to complete a prelim year?
If it only lists a prelim year for someone, it probably means they managed to match into a prelim year but not the categorical residency (derm, anesth, uro, whatever) in addition to that. It's more a negative since getting a prelim isn't a big deal whereas the actual residency is.
I just saw it but it was marked read-only so I can't post it. There were 103 matches out of 105, including matches at Duke (x2), Stanford, Baylor, Vandy, Emory (x2), Mayo, U Mich (x2), U Penn (x3), San Francisco, U Wash (x2), USCD, Cornell, U Pitt, U Va (x6), UCLA, U Wisc (x2) and Wake (19).
Here is Wake Forest's match list, it feels like I have unlimited time now that I've finished Step I so why not spend it compiling a neat list?
