have you guys heard of Aquavan? its a water-soluble pro-propofol drug. it may take over propofol in the next decade or so (if it passes clinical trials, which looks promising)
so it's not egg/soy based? I have never heard about it. Interesting.

Never heard of it. Must say, drug companies are getting much more adept at naming new drugs. Aquavan sounds like a comic book hero. Diprivan sounds...well...

Hopkins had a 100% match rate. You can only match as many as are interested....
You hint at a good, generalizable point about match lists in general.

What can you tell from a school's match list?

You can tell that there were at least n people from that school who ranked a residency program in specialty Y.

For example - Question: Hopkins matched 8 people in ophthalmology. OMFG Columbia only matched 4 people. Hopkins is twice as good for optho, right?
Answer: At least 8 people at Hopkins wanted to match into ophtho. At least 4 people at Columbia wanted to do the same. Without extra information, any other claim is just inference.

Hi!

Can someone please post or PM me with Loyola's (Stritch School of Medicine) 2007 match list? I can't find it posted on their website, and it would be great if someone could provide the info.

Thanks in advance!

mdapp06

any thoughts on this match list?
The Einstein list is strong overall. Its all a question of what you are comparing it to.The IM matches are very good as usual for this school. Many of their grads go to the schools own affiliated hospitals which are highly regarded training programs.

I wonder what those folks who matched at Walter Reed are going to do when it closes down in like 2 years? Its really sad to hear about the conditions there.

be aware that most of these match lists include MD/PhD's, most of whom end up landing very competitive residencies. So some of these awesome match results you're pointing out may not be for people who went through the regular 4-year program.

That is a very important point. You can look at a match list from a less competitive school and say "oh look this person matched #*&@ at #*&(" WOWWW!!!!!!! They're probably MD/PhD.

don't contest the fact that most of the top academic programs are looking for candidates with an intent to pursue serious research careers, but i know that all four of the rad-onc matches from my schoolare regular MD students (not mudphuds).

Check this out:
http://www.bethesda.med.navy.mil/Professional/Public_Affairs/BRAC/index.aspx

The current plan is for WRAMC to close in 2011, at which time it will integrate with the National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda in the brand new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that is going to be built on the Bethesda campus.

I thought most MD/PhDs didnt go into residency? (why would they get a PhD if they didn't want to pursue some sort of basic science lab research?)

Of course MD/PhD's do residency training. You wouldn't get the MD unless you wanted to do your research within a clinical field.

As for specific fields, most MD/PhD's first do their residency training in internal medicine.

That's maybe true in some cases, but the subpar according to sdn schools like mine don't have many md/phd students. We have about 2 per class.

another thing to consider, however, is that a very small fraction of MD/PhDs go into fields like ortho/derm/surgery that most people use as a benchmark for good matches.... a very large chunk of MD/PhDs go into internal medicine and Peds.

looks like about 50-60% In the last 4 years

i wonder what portion of MD/PhDs actually use their PhDs? How many truly go into research pseudo-full time post-clinical training?

for people wanting ucsd's matchlist, the school generally releases an official matchlist about 2 weeks after the match. I have seen a lot of the results, and we had people getting some really good spots this year.

I saw the map of pin-the-tail-on-the-place-you're-going, and it looks like about 90% of the flags are in cali...

what entails "using" a PhD? 80-90% of grads (figures from programs I interviewed at) are holding faculty positions in academic medicine. How exactly they appropriate their time is variable. Most people either drop clinical practice and be a PI, be a PI with a sprinkle of clinical duties, or be mostly clinical and be involved in clinical research studies.

Having a PhD means that, according to an established faculty member in academia, you have learned how to answer a scientific question. You may "use" that skill in a variety of circumstances.

IMO, one who is MD-PhD should 1) drop clinical practice and be a PI, or 2) be a PI with a sprinkle of clinical duties.

Scenario 3) mostly clinical and be involved in clin research can be done very effectively by someone with just an MD. It may help initially for grants to have that PhD.

Am I totally off base here?

more and more, some people (NIH?) believe that it is healthy to have a subset of clinical research (obviously not all of it) conducted by MD/PhDs, assumedly because they can help the strictly clinical people and the basic scientists more on the same page. The point of an MD/PhD is that certain associations come naturally to you that would not come naturally to someone with either degree alone, which may or may not be useful, depending on the nature of what you're doing.

dammit i want stony match list!!!! =P

As usual. Why do UCSD students love to stay in Cali so much?
I mean there are good residencies at good locations outside of California too.

Y'all should probably discuss this elsewhere. There are entire forums and entire threads in those forums dedicated to this very debate. But, for the purpose of briefly setting the record straight, the vast majority of MD/PhD grads do residencies and a large majority have both clinical and research responsibilities to some extent or other, the ratio of which is often largely up to them and also often dependent on their field and research interests.

Yep, but even the IM/Peds matches tend to be at very reputable institutions.

So this thread has officially turned into the stupidest thread ever. Considering how many stupid threads there are on sdn, it's quite an accomplishment.

for better or for worse, nobody ever judges the quality of a matchlist by where the IM people matched.

As for why ucsd people tend to stay in cali, I would think it's because of the path of least resistance, because between similarly matched programs, most people will choose the closer one. If someone could have matched at Hopkins in their field, there is a good chance they could match at stanford/ucsf too. If someone could have matched at michigan/UW, they probably also matched at UCLA. Between similar caliber programs, californians will choose the path of least resistance.

for better or for worse, nobody ever judges the quality of a matchlist by where the IM people matched.

Between similar caliber programs, californians will choose the path of least resistance.

path of least resistance? No, it is because California is the best place to live and most people do not want to leave.

Has GW come out yet?
