Greeting all,

What is the compensation for a new dentist with a 1 year GPR in military?

I'm currently looking at IHS, NHSC, and AF and ARMY.

I found the base pay for an O3 (with 5 years AD..Prior enlisted), but could not find the bonus and special pay afforded to dentist.

Anyone have this info?

Thanks

Your bonuses are based on your creditable service entry date (CSED) which reflects the officer's years of active duty as a dental officer in any of the Uniformed Services and/or the years spent participating in an accredited dental internship or residency training while not on active duty in a Uniformed Service.

You are eligible to receive two bonuses:

1. Variable Special Pay (VSP) which is $250.00 per month for people with less than 3 years creditable dental officer time.

2. Dental Additional Special Pay (DASP) which is a once a year bonus paid in one installment of $10,000 to people with less than 3 years of creditable dental officer time.

HOPE THIS HELPS!

Pay will be exactly the same between AF, Army, and NHSC. I believe IHS has some other salary options in addition to the traditional military pay schedule.

See the thread on military pay to see examples of what other pays are possible. Then go to www.dod.mil/dfas and click on 2010 military pay tables to see the current pay charts and numbers.

Here is the pay for a Captain (O3) straight out of dental school:

Base pay: $3,660.60 (O3 pay at <2years)
BAH $1500 (estimate for the average Army post)
BAS $223.04 (same for all officers)
VSP $250

Monthly total: $5643.64

DASP $10000 (yearly $10,000 paid as a lump sum)

Yearly total: $77,723.68

This is a lot more than I was making when I was in the Army. The DASP was only like $3000 or $4000 and my BAH was only $800 per month. So at least they are making an effort to pay young dentists better.

Is the yearly total $77,723.68 BEFORE TAXES?

ROUGHLY how much after tax dollars will a single person get annually?

You just subtract out the Housing and Food allowances from that total. Factor in your families' tax credits/deductibles add in any other earned income etc. and plug and chug away at the tax brackets that you're in. It's different for everybody.

The $77723 is before taxes. I don't know exactly how much a person would get after taxes, everyone's tax situation is different and it would depend on what state you are a resident of as well, as some states have a state income tax while others do not. You may be able to find a tax calculator online, I'm too lazy to look for one. A good chunk of military pay is not taxable (BAH and BAS), so make sure that you do not include BAH and BAS in your tax calculations. Looking back at my last active duty W-2 they took out about 20% of my taxable income for federal income tax + Medicare + Social Security. I think I got a small refund that year, but most people's refunds will vary based on deductions and other things. I did not have to pay state income taxes, but many people would have to pay a few thousand to their state as well.

A rough estimate at the 20% tax bracket would be:
Base pay + DASP + VSP = $56920 - 20% taxes = $45536.
BAH yearly (average post) $18000
BAS $2676

After tax total = $66212.

Is the Dental Aditional Pay of 10,000 a year there if you take a signing bonus? Like the 75,000 with the navy? Or if you get the HPLRP money?

Also, what is the VSP after 3 years experience?

Thanks

Yes, you get DASP with a signing bonus or HPLRP, as long as you have a dental license you will get the DASP. The VSP goes up to $588.33 per month after 3 years, then up to $1000 per month after 8 years, it decreases after 12 years when they expect you to make board certification pay to make up part of the difference.

With a 1 yr AEGD or GPR you can qualify for the Army ACP program. That is a set of additional requirements that once completed will entitle you to an additional $35k/yr - not sure if the other services have something similar or not.

Hello krmower: What is the ACP program? When I did a search for that I only found AECP program. Is that what you meant, or is the ACP program something totally different?

Or is this what you meant krmower?:

Military members with a baccalaureate degree or higher are eligible to begin the teaching certification process to become an academic subject teacher. However, many service members may already qualify to become a vocational/technical teacher. Military members only need the equivalent of one year of college courses and six years of experience in a vocational or technical field to begin the certification process.

To complete the process, individuals can use an Alternative Certification Program (ACP) or University Teacher Preparation Program. Military Members within the European theater may benefit from an ACP, since this method offers online courses to obtain the teaching certification.

note that the DASP and VSP are active duty bonuses, not reserve or guard bonuses.

According to DFAS reservists get VSP when activated for 30+ days. I pulled the following off the DFAS website:

Variable Special Pay for Dental Officers print page :: email page
Entitlement is authorized for dental officers on active duty for at least one year. These dental officers, serving less than a year, are eligible:

Reservists ordered to active duty, other than training, for more than 30 days but less than a year
Active duty dental officers involuntarily retained under 10 USC 12305
Active duty dental officers who voluntarily remain when some are involuntarily retained
Retirees recalled to active duty for more than 30 days under 10 USC 688.

The monthly rate payable starts at $250.00 if the officer is an intern or has less than three years of creditable service. If the officer is not an intern, the rate continues to increase to a maximum of $1000.00 for those between 8 to 12 years of creditable service.

The monthly rate payable continues to decrease to $666.67 for those officers with 18 or more years of creditable service. Officers in pay grades above 06, regardless of the years of creditable service, can receive a maximum of $583.33 per month.

I don't know if that applies to Guard members as well when they get deployed.

ACP program is totally different. It allows Army dentists that have finished a 1 yr AEGD/GPR program to complete requirements and receive tier 3 bonus pay which is at 35k/yr. Once you enroll in the program, you complete the additional requirements working with a comprehensive dentist at your clinic. The requirements are self-paced, but have taken others 8 months + to complete.

The only information on the program can be found at Army Dental Graduate Education website.
