IMO, this should come from you, not from others. Don't try to fit you into something based on others' experience. You'll end up changing career as some of us here. If I were you, I'd read more about dentistry, shadow/observe some dentists to see what exactly they do. Then make decision from there.snoopy69 said:Hey everybody, I am an undergrad right now and I need to start making some decisions about careers. I was just wondering why you all chose dentistry as your field of choice over other medical careers. What experiences led you to make this decision?

it's safe to say that you would be a "smoking hot OS" if u decided to go that route.

Trust me. You don't want to see what I look like. You don't want to see what JavadiCavity looks like, either.fleisch said:You're too nice...haha...well maybe I wont post it then..🙂 I just think this forum would be so much more interesting if everyone knew what everyone else looked like..🙂 hahaha...maybe not though... 😉 😛

When I tell people I am considering dentistry, they're all like "Why would you want to look at people's stinky mouths all day?" Is this something that ever bothered you? Where any of you initially grossed out by the prospect of working in stranger's mouths??

It's all a matter of perspective. If you're going to be a doctor of any sort, you'd better have resigned yourself to dealing with some of the more unsavory components of human biology, whichever aspect of medicine you practice.snoopy69 said:Thanks for the replies so far everybody. Since about the age when I was barely tall enough to get in the dentist's chair, I remember being thrilled to have a dentist appointment coming up. The clean smell, the incredibly nice and gentle hygienists, the constant smiling in the office, and the fact that my uncle was my pediatric dentist all made each trip so comfortable for me. My aunt and uncle (both dentists with a shared practice) have had the most positive influence on me throughout my lifetime, as they constantly share their experiences with me, and both explain how fortunate they feel to be a part of the dental profession. They are respected in the community, they live comfortably, and they are both knowledgeable and compassionate people. I have had an incredible amount of dental/orthodontic/oral surgery done as I have grown older, and each experience has led to a more confident and happier me. Dentistry is a healing art--you must be skilled at what you do...you must be able to tackle a unique problem on a daily basis...and most of all, you must be able to effectively communicate with those that you treat and heal... It is a profession unlike any other!!! 😍

Did you respond, "because we actually take care of people in school"? 😀lnn2 said:some people even think that you're a fake doctor 😱
My young female hairstylist once asked me "why do u guys wear scrubs but the people going to doctor school don't" 😱 I didn't even know how to anwer it! They even thought dental school is like a 2yr career training school!
Emergency or mentally challenged patients are like u said "grossed out", abscess, pus, bad smell... Either they didn't take care of their teeth, never brush or their caretakers did not take care of them. It's sad! I'm taking a selective advance general dentistry class. We have to take care of mentally chalenged patients, mostly drill-fill, extraction. 9 out of 10 are in bad shape because their caretakers don't know how or neglect to take care of them. You'll never forget the smell either!

) Don't forget to thank the interviewer for their time and the opportunity! Tell them that you hope that you'll be given the privilege of attending their school 👍 (I actually forgot to thank them in one of my interviews!) Send a short thank you note or letter, reemphasize your apprecitation for the opportunity, their time and your hope of the given privilege of attending their school.... blah blah blah blah....hey sometimes you have to be a brown noser (in a subtle kinda way
) gotta do what u gotta do, right?!Typo said:Trust me. You don't want to see what I look like. You don't want to see what JavadiCavity looks like, either.

Precarious_Yups said:A leader should never ask what is; let me put it this way, my ex is a anesthesiologist and she has broken it down like this-- if she were able to handle looking into people's mouths all day, she would have been a dentist... either you can find this an acceptable answer or not, regardless it will be one of those mysteries. I thank God that not all people want to be dentists or else there would not be a market for us to pursue. Personally, I think that this is one of those $40,000,000 questions and is not a valid argument. However, if you do find the idea of working with the body repulsive, then by all means do not pursue such fields that require relative-to-moderate invasive techniques. The world needs to be balanced and Nature works in mysterious ways... (maintain your plans if you want to be a dentist). Best of luck!
